Squeaky Bum Time.

A bit of Wedge related help please.

The seat runners on the driver’s seat have developed a touch of movement front to back accompanied by a squeak. When I push down on the seat’s adjustment bar the movement disappears, so does the squeak. (The bar’s springing feels weaker than the passenger side). The movement is the same wherever the seats is positioned on the runners. It’s never been a problem for the mot test when I pointed it out.

Before I start dismantling parts, has anyone experienced this before? Is the spring likely to be broken, if not can it be re-tempered?

Had similar issue with other "older" cars.
Possibly the hinge pins on the adjuster bar end sticking & needing a touch of lubrication. Aerosol lub with long straw may help the issue as a quick fix. If not a suitable tension spring shouldn't be too hard to find.

Hi,
I believe that there are some some small ball bearings located in the seat runner mechanism that facilitate smooth movement of the two surfaces as the seat position is adjusted back or forward. These would rely on grease to maintain their proper function and if the grease has dried out this could allow the bearings to wear or even jam. I once had a seat jam up and somehow a small ball bearing seemed to have escaped out of its “track”. I would suggest taking the seats out to inspect the condition of the runners and at the very least add some new grease.

That's a correct believe
But I also have seen ball bearings that were rusted solid to the seat's runners.
Lots of penetrating oil and grease solved this in one case ...
