Yes, there can be a whole lot of stupid in Texas, at times!

Actualy, there are a lot of people that don't understand sports cars everywhere. Maybe just cars in general. Get in, turn them on and go!

I had a neighbor in Waco, Tx what told me, "My car doesn't have a battery!" one morning when his car would not start! The same nieghbor who asked to borrow a hack saw to change a flat tire.

He drove a Volkswagon!

The battery was under the back seat, so he didn't know it was there. I filled it with water and started the car for him. Told him to go right to the auto repair and get a new battery! But NO . . . it died on him the next day about 40 miles out of town.

The Hacksaw? Well, He rang my doorbell and asked for the hacksaw, which I gave him. Then my wife said, "Was that Jimmy who asked for a hacksaw?" Ding, Ding, ding . . . Bells went off in my head! I went out side and he was just standing there with the hacksaw in his hand, looking at the flat tire. He was so pittiful, but I laughted anyway! Then I showed him how to change a tire.

I finally got around to removing the original idler pulley that
drives the original TR7 4 cylinder thermal clutch and radiator fan
(I went with electrical fans). If you remove the idler pulley
to make a little more extra space for a large electric radiator fan,
the new alternator belt needed or that fits is Gates #7312.

After all this alternator talk, I'd just like to say I had mine tested a few weeks back...31 years old and the thing tested perfectly. WOOOOOOOOO-HOOOOOOOOO![:p]

Yeah but I got that curse fooled.....I cant take the car out til I get the tower fixed....so the alterantor will remain working..haha kiss that Lucas!! If all else fails, I'll rip the alternator out of my old ladies Saturn.

Hey All, He tryed to use a hacksaw to fix a flat?[V] This is typical of meny people today that don`t have much knowlage of things tech. If I can`t just "plug and play"[:p] then there must be something wrong with it(even if there isn`t) and when there is really something wrong(like a flat tire) then what is the easyist fix?[:(](not always the best, but what invalves the LEAST effort/know how from ME?[:(!]) Most people today have little ability to fix anything.[:(!] My lucus unit(25acr) is still going strong.[8D](for now anyway[8][;)]) Just a few of my thoughts.[:I] Good day/drive to all, Robbie in wyoming

I know I'm late on replying to this but I do want to note the problems I confronted with poor rebuilds sent by VB. They certainly apologized and kept sending me new units - but I really wish they would bench test their rebuilds. I wish that Autozone would do the same for their units, too. I've been through the mill with their rebuilt starters. They'll test if you nag them before leaving the store, but why should that be the default mode?

Testing rebuilds would have saved me a lot of time and headache; I do use my TR-7 for work transportation, not just as a hobby car.

I own a '66 Corvair also, and there's a specialist called Clark's in Massachusetts who does bench test his rebuilds before sending them out. He's a good sized operation; if he can do it, so can VB.

As for updating alternators and starters, the only caveat I offer is that you'll know exactly what you need when you use original or rebuilt parts. So, too, will the next owner. And if you're running a lot more amperage through your wiring, make certain that it can handle it. BL wiring harnesses were designed for ancillaries common to their time, not to future enhancements.
