Coming Home - an expat RHD DHC

Postby Neil W » 24 Sep 2012 08:16

I met the owner of this TR at a Show a few months ago & have kept in touch ever since.
He is bringing his Late fathers DHC back to the UK from South Africa.
I know he won't mind me sharing photos of his stunning red car with a deep shine, which arrives after its 6,400 mile journey to Yorkshire mid October.
Looks great & looking forward to seeing it in the flesh.

From photos looks like a Solihull one so will be interesting to check VIN against mine.

A change from seeing photos of scrap ones & numbers dropping - in East Yorkshire they are increasing !

Looking mighty fine but I can't say painting the bumpers the same colour as body, works. They have to be more incorporated into the body design (like new cars that have that feature). Although the TR7 started to go that direction they weren't there yet. Although Harris Mann wanted the bumpers body colour that only would have worked with his next generation TR7 design that he did on his own time (I believe that design was in John Clancy's Project Bullet DVD). If I recall correctly most every car that had body colour bumpers from the factory had them integrated into body design.

Its going straight from the Docks onto a lowloader to the village garage for an MOT & full underseal & service.
Then registered at the local DVLA Office before they shut it down & off he goes.
Know he joined the local TR Register & I have sent him all the links for here & TRDC.

Will see when Tatton Park is on next year & go in convoy across to show him the TRDC.

Going slightly off topic here but Triumph did experiment with body colour bumpers on one of the TR8 development cars, X925. This was a DHC, in Silver (Platinum?), with a one off trim in brown velour including a different centre console, brown tinted glass, the one piece boot liner & of course the UK spec bumpers painted body colour. I think it has electric windows too, and was trying out trim ideas for the never to be 1982 model year.

The car still exists in very good condition, I saw it a couple of years ago.

Looks like just a cosmetic upgrade. I wonder what happened to the original different alloys as the photo of car out in the wild shows regular alloys? Did they go up to 14" or did they stay with 13"s?

thanks for all the comments, the TR7 (as inherited from my Dad who owned it for the last 20 years and I have just imported back to the UK)is now in my garage in east yorkshire, MOT done, waxoyled, insured etc - all I need is DVLA to register and tax it, get a new UK plate and I am on the road again after nearly a year getting it back. Am hoping to get back to DVLA later this week or latest next to get everything sorted. Neil is right I joined the TR Register about 6 months ago as they meet about 5 miles from where i live so very convenient but I was at the classic car show on Saturday, met Kevin Morton and came away with a TR Drivers application form so guess i am joing this club as well. Look forward to meeting you all next year. Rob

If I can figure out how to attach photos will post some more that I have taken over here

Hope you will soon be on the road Rob - although a UK winter might be a bit of a shock to the car[:)] Look forward to some more pics.

John, interesting you saw PVC last year. The car was for sale at a rather up market sports car dealers in the Sandbanks area of Bournemouth (= expensive) maybe 2 to 3 years ago. I wondered where it had gone. What is that BMC sticker doing on the wing[:0]

Great to see another car in Yorkshire, come down to one of our meetings near Rotherham when the weather gets better.
Tony, I think the trim development car is now owned by David Brand, fomer owner of X921.
