Repair Panels

Postby John Wood » 08 Feb 2012 19:53

I am talking about the repair panels for the wheel arches and the rear wing sections. Is the quality good and are they worth the money?

I used them on the rear of my TR7, very impressed, needs care on welding to prevent too much heat going in which can distort the panel, grind the welds flush and cover with filler to match the body contour and sand back with a fine sandpaper wrapped around an old silcone tube.

Looks great.

I've used repair panels from Robsport in the distant past.

Compared to some of the pattern repair parts I've welded into my Mini Cooper lately, they fitted very well.

I found out a while ago that most of these repair panels are sourced from the same manufacturer, it makes sense really if you think about the limited market for them.

In my experience the best fit are OEM panels which are still available on Ebay from time to time, the best repro panels are usually in red primer and are sold by the best suppliers, S&S, Robsport & Rimmers.

The worst by a long way are usually black and originally came from Moss / Triumphtune, to say they don't fit and need adjustment is an understatement. The front and rear floor panels dont even have the lip to weld to the underside of the inner sill, they need to be welded to the inner sill inside the car.

If you are tackling the inner & outer wheel arches then the repair panels from S&S, Robsport etc. will fit with a bit of minor fettling.

One word of caution when you come to weld the new panels, if someone has put waxoyl or similar in the cavity then clean it out otherwise you will not be able to weld bacause of the fire that ensues[B)]

How about the RH lower panel behind rear wheel? Yellow TCT needs one but Robsport says the RH replacement panel doesn't fit well (LH one is OK). Anyone have any experience with it?
