Here’s where to discuss anything specific about your standard(ish) car or something that applies to the model in general.

Success, sort of........

Postby ObiRichKanobi » 05 Apr 2008 21:46

With the help of JCLAY's tutorial on brakes, and the watchful eye of a mentor I successfully swapped the rear brakes out! Woohoo!!

On the other hand, the knuckle fell off the end of the throttle cable at the pedal, and it frayed some when we pushed it through the firewall and got a new one on. Car runs, but throttle is hanging up at about 1500 RPM. I noticed some slack in it, so will try and get some "shims" in there and see if that fixes it. Not sure if fabricating a new one (F/I cables are NLA) is something I want to try, as my back really doesn't handle the under dash work too well any more.

I purchased a bicycle brake cable (not the sheath) for the time when mine breaks. One end is the same and other has a collar with set screw for setting the length (similar to the bonnet release cable collars.) This assumes that the sheath is not damaged.

If the cable has frayed - it's hopeless. You could take it out and peel back the frayed strand(s) right back to the end, and remove - but obviously this will weaken the cable. Inner cables should be readily available - or just adapt something from another car.

Thanks guys. Part of my problem is that I've got a bad back, and find it really hard to get up under the dash like that. Luckily, I finally got in touch with my "mentor" and we're set to do it a week from Saturday. This time I'll pay more attention, so I can do it myself in the future.
