rear fog lights

how easy is it to fit rear fog lights to a tr7.
it has a fog light switch so presumably i can run wires from
somewhere to power them.

Hi,
Here is what I did. I fitted a red lense behind the clear reversing lamp lense, a double filament holder from a spitty mk4 is used for brake/stop lamp on the outside red & a single filament (original fitment) in the inside red. The stop light is on the outside red this gives some seperation between the stop lamp and the fog lamp.
No problems with the MOT ether.
For the switch connections, have a look under the grill on top of the dash. My fog light wiring is connected to the side light wires using a scotch-lock connection (original connections I think).

Stevie is right,
it's just a matter of connecting the single wire from the fog light (original fog lights were fitted
under the rear bumper, just inside the exhaust end tips) to the connector at each light cluster
in the luggage compartment. Earth is provided through the light fitting, or can (if your light is
a twin cable version) be provided by the 1/4" male spade connector fitted to the rear light
cluster alloy body. There is even a special hole through the luggage compartment floor (with
a blanking grommet in it) for just this use.

It is the Red/Yellow wire.

OK, maybe a stupid question, but why not fit the double filament 5W/21W bulb in the tailight position, giving a tail light or fog light?? Logically in foggy weather you would not need both. Is there a legislation reason for not doing this??

I don't think there is any such legislation for cars close to 30 years old

- but my personal opinion is that it's a better idea to use those twin filament bulb holders
[when you eventually find them!] for something giving a higher safety margin <u>in ordinary driving</u>
and not just in fog or snowdrift driving. If you cross feed and double up the rear position lights,
and the brake lights, you get much better attention from those mobile phone speaking, toddler
obsessed, soccer mums in their urban assault vehicles - might even save you a rear ending!

In the UK at least, there is no legislation to stop you doubling up on rearlights and fogs. Some standard vehicles do it as standard.
But where this set up technically gives you problems is in the proximity of the fog light to the brake lights. There should be a certain distance between the two (can`t remeber what it is) but this set up is too close.
Having said that, I don`t think it should cause problems, either on the road or at the MOT station. It`s certainly neater.
