Window outer weatherstrip

Just replaced the drivers side one on my DHC and I found it a real pain in the neck to do. I did pick up one of the tools for fitting and that did help, as did removing the door card so you could see what was going on.

How did people get it into the bit between the door and the quarter light, silicon spray helped here.

Did I missed something obvious - wouldn't be the first time.

Their is a bolt holding the quarter light, somewhere just inside the door behind the door card if i remember correctly.
I replaced both window channel runner/rubber/felt whatever you want to call it! and found that undoing that quarter light bolt helps a good deal.
Make sure you have the correct channel runner/rubber/felt, dont do what i did, fitted the wrong stuff, window rattled, no seal and had to do it all again!

When I did my outer weather strip I had the door card off and window out as I was going over the whole car before initial "out of country" safety check and registration. This enabled me to grease window lift mechanism and door latch mechanism, install and glue new window track felt, install cracked rear window door guide. I could pull up the weatherstrip clips with my fingers as everything was out. The on,ly thing I missed was levelling the door release latches as I didn't know about the stops at the time. This might not help you if you are just replacing the strip but if any of these other things haven't been done (need to be done) may as well do it all at one time and be done with it.

Oh, I also took the quarter light frame out and apart (drill out a few rivets) at same time, painted it with black trim paint as it was chipped/worn in a few places.

There are two bolts that hold the window light frame in place. There are under the door card. The main trick to installing the rubber seal is to push the seal down tight with the edge pointing tward the opposite edge of the window opening. If the rubber is sticking up, it will not put pressure against the window. I ordered new tabs to hold the rubber in place but I also used the old ones. Hold the rubber tight against the door while pulling the clips up with a tool to hold the rubber in place. You can make the tool with a strip of steel about 1'4" wide. Bend a tab about 30 degrees on one end and a loop on the other end.

Even with the quarter light bolts loose I had to trim the new strip with a razor blade where it tucks in next to it. Otherwise it left a big lump.

Yes you do need to trim it.

Spent a bit more time today tweaking it and I'm generally happy with it. I used the weather strip from Robsport which does seem quite good quality - though not an exact match to the originally.

One thing I did find was using a very thin steel rule and holding this against the bent bit of wire made fitting a lot easier. I pushed this down into the clip and found the weatherstrip slide down easier.

I'll post a couple of pictures when BT finally sort out my broadband - but that's another story.
