That was the era of trying to meet emission requirements, without the knowhow of today. Yes those cars were slow.

They are only talking about 1980 by the looks of it. After all the 1968 Holden Monaro 327 did about 135, so I'm sure the 1968 7.0L Corvette was a lot faster than that.

The 1970 Oz Ford Falcon GT was doing just on 150 MPH, so again faster than the cars of the 80s.

OOOOH Clay, do I ever! I want it to be quicker than modern machinery, handle better than modern machinery, It already looks better than modern machinery.
I am prepared to pay a lot too, just I don't always have the necessary spends.

Okay, to upgrade a 2200lb TR7 to keep up with modern Soccer moms in their mini vans, one would need:
1. Four wheel ventilated disc brakes, like off a BMW.
2. A modern V-6 engine producing a minimum of 250HP.
3. The cabin must be super insulated for a quiet 70 decibel environment in the coupe body.
4. Power steering.
5. Two large cup holders.
6. The console lid must be converted into a small child's seat with a seat belt harness to hold Junior in place.
7. The doors converted so one can't bang their head getting into the car.
8. Price it out the dealers door for under $20,000US.

The trouble with car comparisons based on figures is that they don't even begin to tell the whole story.

You can look at power and torque figures but these don't tell you enough.
You can look at power to weight ratios, but they don't tell you how well a car puts that power to the ground, all that power is wasted if the wheels are spinning.
You may then look at acceleration times over a set distance, while these may give a better indication of how well that power is put down, but not how well it stops or goes around corners.
You can time it around a course ans measure deceleration and cornering g forces.

But all these measurements and only indicators based on artificial parameters and the limitations of the testing methods, which can have many variables such as weather conditions, variations between the instruments (such as dynos) used, the differing driving abilities of the individual testers and the condition and state of tune of the example being tested.

Then you have the most important characteristic of a car to the enthusiast........How it makes you feel!
This can't be measured by instruments or compared by tables of figures!

#1 = Yes ....v8 all the way baby !!
#2 = I'd like the car to be quick on the quarter mile, but I don't want a Friday night special ....just something that's nice and streetable, its a convertible after all!!
#3 = I'd like to budget an eventual 12 G's on my car to put it back where I'd want it to be (paint, interior, suspension and engine )

Yes I want reasonable performance from my 7. I'm not interested in traffic light races, I win most of those in my 7, because the other guy isn't racing, & only puts his foot down when he sees my tail disappearing.

I am interested in overtaking on my country roads. Too many cars, more every day, are waffling along at 75 to 85 Km/H in a 100 zone, & the straights are short.

I have had a couple of drivers put their foot down as I pulled along side, & leave me sitting out there like a shag on a rock. It doesn't happen with the 8 or the S2000. With the Ford/Mercury Capri however it can happen with a push bike, so overtaking is rare.

Since the new engine mine is doing under 17 second quarters. Yes I know, not fast at all, but it is enough quicker that I feel more confident on the road, & that is all good to me.
