Door handle escutcheon

Postby rgsSpider » 05 Dec 2012 21:43

So an email chat with Spider Diva Monica brought up a question regarding the placement of the door handle escutcheon. Mine are mounted to the door underneath the door card, Monica's are mounted over the top of the door card. On my door cards are a plastic trim piece that is mounted inside the door card, you can see it in the picture. So what is the general consensus here?

The bottom picture is correct. It goes behind the door card.

Another example of a not good design solution that doesn't bring the thought of quality to the front of one's mind. Makes you think "this can't be right" but it is.

It is interesting, I've seen them mounted both ways in some pics. This just happens to be the way mine were when I got the car. Thanks for the replies!

Hi,

There are two type of door escutcheon, early type in the top picture and later in the second picture.Hence the different appearances

Cheers John

John, You need to pop your eyes out and give them a quick clean [:)]
Both escutcheons are the same (early type) Its just one is fitted behind the door panel and the other is fitted on top of the door panel ie door panel fitted first, then escutcheon fitted.

Cheers, Dave

Ah yes indeed Dave, quite right. The late type interior handle & escutcheon is quite different, with a grained effect to the plastic surround, and a matching single lever type lock release pull mounted centrally in the recess.

IIRC some of the connecting parts behind the door trim are different as well, as the door lock button (also different) on the top edge of the door trim is in a slightly different place.

So what on the face of it are just cosmetic differences are in fact a bit more involved!

But to answer the question, yes your's are fitted correctly, Spider, Monica's are incorrect.

That's what I get for thinking he was a-ok.[^] So my estucheons are wrong, but c'mon! Check out my nice stitching on the door panels!! One of my fave things about my car. Yeah, it doesn't take much to make me happy! [:D]

It is beautiful stitching Monica! Gives it that...rich Corinthian leather look!
