ignition switch

Postby jfecteau » 30 Nov 2010 19:51

my friend has just been uncovered after four years of unwanted isolation (stored outside and exposed to the elements. She is now garaged and ready to be cleaned up and fired up. While moving her to garage it was found that the ignition witch would not turn, therefore the steering wheel will not turn. Has anybody had this happen and if so please drop me a line your solution.

I usually just means that the steering is turned tight against the lock pin. Try turning the wheel a bit one way or the other and try the key. Of couse this is assuming that you have the correct key to start with.

A little WD40 in the lock cylinder will probably help. Let it sit a bit then jiggle the wheel and the key as you try to turn it.

If that doesn't work it's not too painful to remove the steering cowl and take off the whole lock assembly.

I thought that I had a stuck locking tab on one TR7. It turned out that the locking tab had moved out of the way, but the car had sat so long that the steering had tighten up. I finally had to really crank the steering wheel to get it to turn.

If you have a trolley jack handy and a hard surface under the car then slip it under and crank it up a bit to ease pressure on the steering column before you start yanking away.
