Exhaust soot

Postby nick » 28 Nov 2010 18:14

I thought this exhaust manifold I removed yesterday looked excessively sooty. The engine does use a bit of oil. Is this what I would expect to see in a normal engine?

Hi Nick,

Seen a lot worse, hen you consider the age dont look terrible to me.What do the plugs look like if one cylinder is burning more than another then plugs will show this. The biuld up in picture is carbon build up.
Looks like you may need some manifold to head gaskets as fitted to the F.I. engines

Cheers John

Oh!!! What a horrid sight! If you can't see fit to keep the runners of your exhaust manifold spic & span on a twice weekly basis, well, well, there must be something inherently defective with your personality.

And, while we're at it, a better manifold to head seal will be attained when you have the local machine shop mill the mating surface flush. When I say 'mating', I am specifically referring to the exhaust manifold.

that's an idea mildred, if i remember rightly my manifold hasn't got the flattest of faces so a trip to the milling machine might be the way forward.

Nick, that pic reminds me of when i bought my sprint engine and then spent a few months rebuilding it[V]

Still, i found this thing in the room where my wife works and it cleaned it up a treat[:D]...........

Exhaust soot? What's that? Nothing like an O2 sensor to keep the exhaust clean.[8D]
