Leaves in the screen vent

Postby prlee » 03 Sep 2010 19:35

Hi, so I have the TR back, but when I use the screen vent there is an increasing number of leaves in the system. How do you get rid of these?

The other vents are easy!

If you find out post it. From memory I never managed it until I took the entire dashboard out to replace the heater matrix.

Not a fun job !

If it isn't broken, I can still fix it

I'd say the best thing is not to get them in there in the first place. I have never had this problem, so why are you?

Do you park under a lot of trees?

Is the mesh that should be under the bonnet grill missing? It should stop the leaves getting in.

If you have tricky leaves that do get in, make a point if shutting the ventilation flap, when you park the car. Then clean any leaves out of the plenum before opening the flap.

As to getting them out, use the car more, with the fan on high speed, & they will eventually clear. Driving very fast will help with more, & higher speed, air through the ventilation system.[}:)] Now there's an excuse to go for lots of drives.

I'm in the same boat, as soon as i put the blowers on i get half a forrest shoot up and clog the widscreen vents. No trees near me, must of been a P/O. The only thought i had was to turn the blowers on to get them to come up, then use a vacuum cleaner to suck and potentially break the leaves up small enough to get through the mesh. It was one of those jobs i never got round to doing, let me know how you get on!

Another thought, the mesh is held in place by screws aren't they? i've just come off a night shift so my memory isn't great. if they are, undo them but tie some wire to the vents to stop them dropping into the abyss. turn the blowers on and they should blow out into the cab. once they're out, pull the wire to raise the mesh an position into place and put the screws back in. What's the chances of it being that simple though!

I eventually fished most of the leaves out from mine using a bit of wire bent into a "J" poked through the grill - with the fan on I could break the leaves into smaller pieces and they blew out.

If you're complaining about the leaves then all the crumbling sponge must have left your heater by now........[:0]

At least we don't have to worry about replacing any pollen filters at £25.00 a pop. It's my garage's favourite along with screenwash.

One one of my wedges (cant remember if it was the A/C car or non-A/C car tho..) I used light PSI airblast and the hose of a vacume cleaner, at the same time. I was able to suck most if not all of the stuff out [:D]

Thanks Hasbeen, I no idea where the car has been parked in the 27 years before I got her. But I do know that since then she has not been parked any where near trees, but dead leaves keep appearing, the rest of the system was clear when she went into resto in my folks barn, more leaves have appeared since. The grill on the bonnet is intact.

Looks like a common uk problem, will try and blast them out one way or another.
