Does anyone have their windscreen out?

Hi all,

if anyone out there has a '7 with the windscreen out, I need a favour!

you will see my windscreen surround, top and bottom is completely rotten. [B)]
I'll be fabricating new panels to replace it all, but the problem is, I don't know any sizes to make the new panels - I can't measure my car, the metal just isn't there!

So I need some measurements for the aperture:

Measurement (B) is the centreline, (A) & (B) should be let's say 350mm to each side? Measurements from the lip will be fine.

Also, does anyone have any decent pictures of the base panel? Mine looks like this:

Which makes it hard to visualise what it's supposed to look like!

If anyone can oblige, I'll be most grateful. As you can see, I need all the help I can get! [;)]

Sorry for the somewhat green pictures [:D]

I'll be refitting the front screen tomorrow ...
Will try and take the measurements then (if I don't forget).
Otherwise I do a have a few spare shell.

can't help you with sizes but.........
you'll get there its a horrible spot too work on apparently

beaten to it! I have some pics if you want as its I job Iam just about to start also. Just let me know what you need.

Iam tackling it in a slightly different manner to you. I have found a panel that has been cut off a scrap car that is in good condition. They have cut about 3 inches down the bulkhead and about 6 inches up the a posts. This means I can unpick the spot welds and make my own repair panels from it. I only need to replace the sections near the a post in the windscreen corner, so you can have the other pieces if it helps.

How did you take out your windscreen?

With the surround as rotten as it was, it was halfway out anyway. I levered the trim up enough with a screwdriver to expose the sealer, then used a stanley knife to cut it out. Then I lifted the screen in the places it was coming up, again enough to get the knife in and cut it. I just went round the screen bit by bit, lifting and cutting sections at a time until it was all cut through. It took me about half an hour.
I did crack the screen though! [}:)] Given that and the state of the surround, I'd probably have been just as well off sitting inside the car and kicking the screen out. Would have taken thirty seconds and the result would have been the same. [:p]
I did manage to save the trims though, which was good. I've bought some new ones I saw on ebay the other day, I guess I won't be needing them now.

I'd be interested in any bits you have left - I won't be tackling this for another month or so, so no hurry!

Measurement over the centre of the front screen frame (in millimetres) ...

Iâ€™d use (a template of) the front screen for the rest of the measurements.
And donâ€™t forget youâ€™ll need 6mm spacers underneath the front screen ...

Thanks Beans!

I think I know where I'm at a bit more now, so I should be able to make a start.

I had a phone chat with Steve @ S&S yesterday, his suggestion is to get a replacement used screen surround and strip that for the good metal. It's a good plan, and liable to be a lot easier than fabricating from scratch.
