Why not dispense with the handbrake mechanism and cable completely and put another master cylinder inline with the rear brakes and have a hydraulic setup?
I've done this modification on both a Mk2 and an E-Type Jag a lot of years ago to get around their terrible handbrake mechanisms. Works a treat.
