Steve, I'm not sure you've entirely grasped what I've been suggesting but the upshot it we cannot realistically continue with a site that is continually being locked out to new members owing to the spam issues. That is all I am suggesting we sort out and if it can't be done with this existing site then we would all have to stick together to replace it with a new one. If that is not an option then I'll duck out from trying to sort things out altogether. It's only because I've known Jay for years I thought I should be the one to try and do it.

With regards to how the forum is funded it's all paid for by Jay. My solution is to transfer the ownership (or at least the bills) from Jay's account into the TR Drivers Club. The existing moderators would carry on exactly as they have for years and nothing would change other than we'd upgrade the forum software to stop the spam. But as I say, if we are unable to do it to the existing site then we would just leave it here as an archive and start a new duplicate where we would all carry on. In a very short time we'd probably find it's all thriving again and we have none of the problems we are having today.

We obviously all agree that the status quo is not an option so something has to be done. Its good to hear that we have some knowledgeable folks who now how this thing works and are working on a fix, it sounds like there are some viable options.

Hopefully we can raise the necessary funds. I have no idea about any of this, but would like to know how much we would need to raise.

I know a few of us who would be prepared to give a few dollars, but it would be nice to know how much we would need.

Just my 2p for what it's worth.I've been a moderator on another forum for many years and have suffered the same sort of issues.
The way we approached it was to make it so that any new members first post had to be approved by the mods. This way the public forum doesn't see the spam all over the place and the mods can delete/bin the spammers at their lesuire.

Which, Steve, is very close to my idea of a gate keeper to screen the new members.

This website, particularly the forum, is much like our TR7/8's. In terms of constant development and refinement, it ain't. So much like the D-I-Y we do on our cars, why can't we develop a cheap fix to control the folks who would do us harm?

The other forums I stumble upon, and see fellow members using, are awkward and lack the bon-vivant we share in this sandbox.

I agree with Mildred. There is got to be a way to handle this without throwing the baby out with the bathwater. I was a member of a Jag forum when I was considering buying an XKR. In it you were an associate member until you had five posts that were monitored after which you could freely post. Seemed to keep out the spammers without a lot of technical behind the scenes coding. I don't know if something that low tech is more work than despamming. Any other forum I've seen although fancier is less readable than this one even though it has a "dated" appearance and that's going back pre internet when all we had was local message board sites for basic messages and downloadable files (usually games). It seems less than desirable to give up what we have for something less appealing to make it easier to get rid of spam and still let in new members.

John - The way I read the posts is that majority here are in favour of 'our' getting the site from Jay and putting in place a screening-process of some sort.

Please don't give up on this - this Forum is the backbone of the Wedge-Movement worldwide and we need someone to stand up who's prepared to take it on - and to give our excellent moderators a rest from the continual need of de-scamming on a daily basis.

As discussed in the past - there are some who think about doing something and have an opinion - and those who actually get up, go out and actually do something.

In my opinion - for what it's worth - your input is valued to a number of us with lesser skills.

Ok, for what it's worth, here's how I see it, Jay has been extremely generous in keeping this site on for our benefit, especially as his interests have moved on.
It's probably high time we moved on.
If (with Jay's blessing of course) we could transfer the archive from here to a new home (with hot and cold running modern software), then our forum can flourish and continue to be a valuable resource to all TR-7 & 8 enthusiasts.
To do this we need new to be accessible to new members, they are the one's who keep the forum relevant to the forum's subject matter (TR-7s & 8s) because they ask the questions that all us old hands already know and otherwise would no longer bother discussing.
This keeps the forum fresh and on track, otherwise it risks becoming a bit of a stale old private club.

That's not to say the clubishness aspect is a bad thing, indeed it's what allows us to share our interest in these cars across the world, but it can't be healthy for the forum in the long run if it solely becomes a private club excluding fresh blood.

If funding is a problem, then as I suggested in an earlier post, limited advertising could help, this advertising would need to be low key and relevant to the forum, ie, reputable parts suppliers, repairers and such like, this would also be a useful service to new members. By involving these advertisers we might even be able to negotiate members discounts or even the occasional group buy.

But all this is totally dependant on being able to transfer the archive across to the new home.

Gee Whiz! This is starting to sound like the rats planning to abandon a sinking ship. Does this mean I need to backup my articles and missives to a personal lock box?

I thought we were doing just fine, other than the spam boys.

Mildred - I think it's more a case of the 'rats' trying to keep the sinking ship afloat...

Please help us by starting to bail..

My quick 2 cents
It needs to be modernized.
Most "new" systems roll over the old system pretty decently

Does Jay read this forum ever? Seems like everyone is talking around him. Would be nice to hear from him.
