Not quite true, my DHC in it's earlier guise with it's original 3.90:1 back axle was more fuel efficient [B)]
But the last time I drove it as such we could still get leaded fuel from the pump.
With the 3.45:1 that is fitted now, it is between 5 and 10 % thirstier.
That might be due to modern fuels having a lesser energy level [?]

You might have something there. Don't know about Europe but most fuels in N/A have 5% to 10% (and sometimes higher although they usually indicate it)) alcohol content which has a lower energy content. Only a few stations have no alcohol in their high test like Shell, Chevron and Co-op. Of course here most older stock engines here have the 8 to 1 compression and only need the 87 Octane (N/A) although some use the mentioned high test just to avoid the possibility of alcohol problems on older systems.
