A bit of skullduggery perhaps?

 I've got my axle back at last and since found the diff carrier shims are unobtainium. Bugger. So, i have one original diff shim and the original pinion shim, that's it. Can the thickness of the diff shim i have lost be calculated from the gap? Ie assemble it with a shim on one side, machine a piece of steel to slip in the gap left by the missing shim to ensure the diff is right over to one side but leave enough room for a feeler guage. Talk about making an absolute balls up of this... How did they calculate the size of the shims from the factory? I can't imagine for one second they had a guy spend a whole week on one axle! Then again maybe they did if you factor in strike action and tea breaks... thanks guys.

That's a huge relief, thanks for letting me know Steve. Just got to work out what size i need now. I was up your way not that long ago, Lloyd colne BMW's spraybooth extract fan parted company from the motor, I happily sorted that for them but refused to clear up the brown stain left by the painter when the fan blew up :-)

pls excuse the sideline commentary...

Rob, if getting this toy on the road is the priority it may be better to palm the axle rebuild off to S+S so you can focus on prepping the rest of the car.

Can't wait to read your reports and see pictures of you using it for the intended purpose!
