I'm hearing nothing from Jay so will try getting hold of him on the telephone again. I've got everything ready to go on a new forum so we can put an end to all the spam problems and having to shut the forum to new members but without Jay's cooperation I don't think it's viable to go ahead.

What I really want to do is upgrade this one under new ownership to safeguard it for the future rather than create a replacement. But if it transpires we do need to completely replace it then we will all have to stick together to make that worthwhile.

As above, I think it generally goes quiet at this time of year. A lot, like me, have the car off the road for the winter. The weather and road conditions are not conducive to enjoyable driving (in a DHC at any rate) or to driveway fixing. There is also that commercial racket called Christmas which tends to pre-occupy minds and efforts leaving little time for more interesting avenues.

Having said that, it would still be good to lose the moronic spammers!

The forum was down completely for 3 or 4 days. Only came back up today for me. Not sure if others had this problem

Cheers Troy

Had no trouble with it here Toy. Must be just your area, or your net provider.

We don't own the existing forum Steve so with current owner Jay too busy to give the forum much attention I've been asking him to let us take it over so we can upgrade it. Without Jay's assistance though the only alternative is to replace it and start from scratch. That is certainly not a preferred option but the only way to close out the spammers and save the pair of moderators all the work to eliminate the spam every day (other than closing the forum to new members which is the situation we are currently in).

So unless anyone has any better suggestions I'll try to get hold of Jay again and see if we can move things in the direction I've outlined above. If anyone vehemently objects then I'll just give up because I don't want to waste my time if anyone thinks it's not worthwhile and we should simply let the forum die. FaceAche is the winner out of this current mess and I don't particularly like using the groups in FaceAche.

There's always here... http://www.triumphexp.com/phorum/list.php?3

I only post there occasionally because I like this forum better. At least it's better than Facebook.

In my opinion starting a brand new forum is a wast of time, as the only reason that this one is so good is the information it holds.

the only way forward is to migrate the full forum into a new format.

I see even the newest version of this forum was released on March 16, 2009.

5 years old, i have asked someone i know to look into seeing if it is possible just to lift the forum and put it back into a new format.

Also have asked my forum host to help but they cant do anything when locked.

As said i help run 3 or 4 forums and own 2 and must admit this one gets hit hard with spam compared to mine.

X2 !!!!

Not only would I be more than interested in partnering with you on this John ....Id also like to eventually revive the home page / website completely!
If Jason would agree to releasing the DB, transferring all the members and posts to a new format probably wouldn't take much more than a weekend to complete.
Its probably the only solution to the spam issues.

I will also mirror the comments above about traffic on the site ....there's always a slow down on car site this time of year , it will pick up once the winter projects commence and the show/expo season kicks into gear.
We have a very good "regular" base here who enjoy posting/conversing even in the "off" season!!!

Ron.

Hi,

It would be a crying shame to loose the wealth of knowledge on here IF the data base cannot be relocated.

I had a funny feeling Ron you may be interested in my learned friends John's suggestion [;)]

Cheers John

Do we know if

1. this is a paid site?
2. how much Jason is paying for the domain name?
3. would we change to a free phpBB format or a paid one?
4. how would it be funded?

the problem with free forums (although good) is we don't own the content of the forum is this an issue.
