Gear stick banging up and now

Thanks for the confidence building words. Really thinking tonight after lying under the car and i couldn't even work out where the old bushes are that maybe mechanical stuff is not for me!! BUT i will have another go.

I have a list of jobs to do first. What's easy?

Work out why the fuel gauge doesn't work
The worst wheel wobble in the world. Maybe measure for spacers?
The gear linkage
The Speedo cable (surely that must be a good place to start!!!)
Remove the Plastic bumper cover and replace
Remove and replace the viscous coupling

Then i can drive it and see what falls off next
Any tips?

The front one on the LH side is just visible behind the rear bushes in the lower picture.

The lower restrictor plate on the right is just put there for the sake of not contaminating the drive with more oil :roll

If it hasn't been suggested before get an OEM manual. It is quite big and has easy to follow steps for taking apart and putting together. Hard copies are available from ebay etc. pdf versions are available on line for free and you can print out the section you need at the moment. As they were upgraded as the production and changes proceeded, don't get a 1979 manual if you have a 1980 car for example. I had an old tattered one that came with my car (it's more tattered now). Do not make do with a Chilton's etc. as they come with enough information to get you into trouble and not enough to get you out. Ironically they are not for the beginner.

Most problems have been asked and addressed over the years (wheel wobble etc) and you can glean a wealth of information by using the search function on this website. Most issues are common issues, there is little that is undiscovered country although new stuff does turn up and sometimes asking a question a different way can elicit a different response that might turn on a light bulb (no disparaging Lucas remark). :P

Great photos from Beans.

If you are still having trouble knowing what you are looking at, next time you are under the thing, get someone to lift & drop the gear stick. You should then be able to see where the extension is flopping about.

Thanks for the pics and advice. I bought a big red book from. Ss prep that says TR7 on the front in white and a fhc TR7 on the front . It came yesterday so not had time to look at in in detail Can't seem to attach the picture

I've got a well worn oil fingered TR7 parts book from back in the day (Rimmers use the exact same drawings on their website :D ) and an equally tatty Haynes manual that get me through most jobs. Failing that this forum has seen and passed on so much experience.

I think that's the one. Mine is an 1980 manual from 1980, it's missing the covers and the last few pages and many have been separated so I don't mind getting it dirty. :P

Now the cars on my ramps i wriggled under. There are NO bushes left so it's clear why the gearstick bumps about.
I plan to have a go tomorrow or Sunday.

There's 8 bushes to replace? Is that right? I can see 4 in the pics.

There's a fair bit of oily bits around this area.

To clarify perhaps, there are 8 "half" bushes fitted as pairs in four locations. Rgds, DM

Not unusual the have it oily around this area which is why most transmission mounts have turn into a mass of jelly baby (for you English types). The oil can be blown back from leaky bits in the engine or it could come from a leaking O ring on the gear selector shaft. I've fixed the leaky engine bits and put a round Tupper ware lid above the 1" spacer to make an umbrella for the trans mount. I've also smeared black silicone over the rubber trans mount to protect it from the oil. Too early to tell how effective it all is, I'll have another look next time it's up on jacks stands.
