Tyre size for standard alloy wheels?

Tyre size for standard alloy wheels?

I'm getting a set of factory alloys refurbished. Can I use the 175/70x13 tyres on my old steel wheels or is the tyre size for the alloy wheels different? (I've seen a set of alloys on Ebay with 185/60x13 tyres).

I used the 175/70x13 tyres on my alloys,when i took them off my steels.Not had any issues with them.

Original cars left the factory with either 175/70x13 or 185/70x13 tyres. The first ones are a bit small though (imho [:I])

<font color="green">When I fitted refurbed alloys to my 2l some time ago I just used the tyres which I had on the steels, which I think were 175's - can't check as the car is not here at the moment, simply becuase they hadn't done many miles and so it would have been silly to change them. When I come to need new tyres again are there any real advantages to going to 185's?

Are there any disadvantages?

Just idle curiousity at the moment as the tyres are still fine.</font id="green">

185 tires would be slightly larger and because the 70 profile is the same would be slightly wider. No disadvantages. Factory put 185's on alloys after all.

Lets see, the TR8 alloy rim was 5.5J13 meaning it had a rim width of 5.5 inches (or roughly 140 mm).
A tire designated 175/70R13 is built for a rim width of 5 inches, and
a tire designated 185/70R13 is built for a rim width of 5.5 inches. I guess this answers the question...
(185 is the only dimension designed to fit a 5.5 inch wide rim, btw. The thread is usually between
189 and 197 mm wide. For all the various aspect ratios...)

The 175/70R13 have a rolling circumference of 1757 mm
The 185/70R13 have a rolling circumference of 1800 mm, a difference of +2.5%

My dhc has 205/60 x 13 on factory alloys, a combination I've used for about 15 years with no problems.

F1, I have the slightly larger 205 65 R13 tyres on the back,
[185 75s on the front], of my 7, on 7x13 alloys. Its the red/orange
car in my photo's, & there are some side on pics.

These 205s are 10 years old Bridgestones, & are now very hard. They
make the car beautifully "taily". I can actually pull power slides,
[yes, with a stockish UK spec 2L], out of corners, which I could
never do with tyres with average grip. I hate the thought that they
will soon start to degrade, & will have to be replaced, & I'll loose
all this fun. They have only lasted so long as the car has been kept
in dark sheds for the last 10 years.

Graham, have I had two 7s on stock alloys, one with 175 front, & 185
rear tyres. This was the nicest handling 7 I've owned. I've had one
with 185s all round, & it was also great.

My present 7, with 185s/205s on 7x13 inch rims has greater cornering
power, but not such nice handling. Its much less forgiving & is more
likely to bite you if you stuff up.

Of course the 8, with its high power & grippy 15s on it, is always
looking for a chance to bite.

What type of nut is required for the original Alloy wheels? Tapered or flat?

Jclay, they are flat, with a very thick washer, which is kept on the
nut, by what must be a reverse taper.

I have found the washers supplied with after market nuts are thin, a
little too large in diameter, & tend to lock in the recess in the
wheel.

Hello again

I agree with Hasbeen in that 185s all round make the car handle beautifully. In my experience Uniroyals were head and shoulders above the others that I tried, especially in the wet in terms of grip and "feel". Don't know if they're still available in this size. (This was on a fhc with Koni front dampers, Spax on the rear and standard but new springs - a fine combination to me, anyway).

I put on the 205s (Uniroyals again, initially) purely for cosmetic purposes and don't remember noticing significant improvement in any area over the 185s.

I've got my newly powder coated wheels back (looking great) and have been checking around for tyre prices. Kwikfit seem to have a great deal on at the moment - Continental Conti-Eco Contact 3's (185/70's)for only £37.80 each if you buy four. The only problem is I can't find any Kwikfit branches with the tyres in stock, and it's apparently around a 6 week wait for a "factory order"[:(]

I'll maybe revert to swapping over my old 175's after all (and also try and keep my wife happy that I'm not spending any more money "on that old banger"!)
