Trunk Keys

I only received one key with my car. It works in the doors and the ignition, but does not work in the trunk. Should my ignition key work in the trunk or did the car have a seperate trunk key?

It was another key. Much shorter and with different design.
Usually this was common between trunk and glove box...

My doors/ignition key is the same as for the trunk.
There is a little key for the glovebox, maybe this work also for the trunk.

I think your trunk lock is way past its expected life span
if the long key for the ignition can lock/unlock it...

There have been 2 different trunk locks. One is quite large, with a
plastic escutcheon, & fills most of the lock recess in the lid. This
one takes the ignition key. Its some years since I had a 7 with this
lock, so my memory is a bit vague.

The other one is all chromed metal, & has the small key, common
with the glove box.

Well just to confuse you, my late FHC has the same key for doors & ignition, & another smaller key for both boot (trunk) & glove box. My trunk lock is the late type that Hasbeen describes with the large black plastic escutcheon, but it cannot be opened with the ignition key.

I know these are the original locks & keys.

Jim, presumably your trunk is not locked right now, but you would like to be able to lock it? Depending on whether you have the early or late type lock, you should be able to find a used lock assembly complete with key in good order, & change the whole thing. Beware though, there is I think a difference in the boot latch assembly (the bit inside the trunk lid) between early & late locks so try to find one the same as you currently have.

Alternatively, you could take your lock to a locksmith who will make a key from your lock. This would then operate the glovebox lock, unless either lock has been changed from original.

Thirdly, you could get a Heritage certificate. This lists the original key numbers, which you could take to the locksmith to have him cut keys. Again, this only works if the locks are original.

Doors & ignition are long key 1, glove box & boot are short key 2, on my 1980 DHC

I have 3 keys with mine, the big key for the ignition and two little ones, one of which fits the trunk and one which fits the glove compartment. I don't know if the car came this way(the car only has 10,700 miles on it now, 10,120 when I bought it, original verifiable miles)or if the locks on the glove box or trunk were changed in the past but have talked to others who have 3 keys and many who have only 2 keys.

On my 82 the long key is for the ignition and door locks, the short key is for the trunk (boot) and glove box.

If I remember correctly the 78 was exactly the same , even though the trunk lock was the early version.....

I had the same problem in that I bought a car with sevreral different keys, none of which opened the boot (trunk) I took the easy route. I blanked off the lock hole and fitted an electric release with a hiden cable back up. I can now wire the electric release into the alarm and open it from outside. the blank is bolted in so I can change it back later if I want to.

My ignition key operates the doors, glovebox and boot, it also opens the doors of most other TR7s, I've never managed to start another car with it yet though. It also opened my brother in law's GT6 boot.

I got another key cut from my "skeleton" key and it wouldn't unlock anything at all. I got a new key cut from the code and that only opens what it's supposed to, the doors and ignition.
