Big Badda Boom!

On the way to work this morning,doing about 20 mph on a country lane
when BANG! Car lost drive,rolled to a stop,got out,looked underneath
car.Lots of oil and two big holes in rear axle.Called the recovery
firm and got dragged home.Decided to take day off work to remove the
'offending article' and call Robsport to order an axle/diff/bushes
etc.etc. Never a dull moment,eh?

Well you were right when you said you thought the diff was on the way out! That looks like scrap now, Paul, what a PITA.


Another contribution to Simon's retirement fund then? You will soon be the forum expert on diffs & back axle removal[:)]


While you have the back end apart is there any other jobs worth doing in there?

Leave it out,Tone!
Shocks,bushes,springs,trailing arm/tie bar repaint,new brake pipes,
check/repaint fuel tank,rear disc kit...etc...etc....
The visa card is gonna take a pasting!...Simon will be a happy man!

Take this chance and fit a proper i.e 5-speed rear axle...

Dunno if a five speed axle will work on a three speed auto box,Odd.
Now you've sown that little seed,i will enquire if its worth the
hassle swapping to the later 3.08:1 axle,but the later box was a
four speed.

You've got 1:1 in top gear, right?
Then a 3.08 (or ideally a 2.84:1) rear axle would be perfect for your car.
Remember the manual gearboxes have an overdrive fifth ratio...

Thanks Moe,but i already sourced a used axle and decided to get a
recon diff to be sure.I dont want to change this car to manual as its
a bit different,and i like the auto - got the v8 manual after all!
Odd,i talked with Simon about the 08:1 axle,can be done,but cost
goes up,brakes,prop etc.so i decided that i liked the way it is
enough not to meddle.
Took the diff off this evening -

The carrier assembley has shattered into many bits,yet the crown and
pinion seem relatively unscathed.The cross shaft has shot its pins
and one of the cogs has split in two-one of the teeth missing.Dont
spose i'll get my surcharge back on it!

Been there, done that [:(] I fitted a Dolomite 1500cc auto diff onto an 1850cc manual car to give me an overdrive like gearing on a car without overdrive. It lasted a year or so [:(]
