It sounds as if the distributor has been put back with the shaft 90 degrees out, but then the leads also put back 90 deg out to match. If No 1 lead matches the firing position it will run OK.
Carb mounts (the rubber bit) are difficult now. The modern rubber is rubbish and does not last long. If you use them use cable ties to pull the carbs back and take the load. It is the cantilever load on the mounts that tears them. You could try people like S&S and Robsport for second hand ones. There are aluminium mounts available as replacements but they are quite expensive, although a one time fix.
