My New Disc Brake Back Axle

Hi,
A few pictures of dics brake back axle i brought of Fleabay for a very fair price,in kit form but complete apart from a siutable handbrake cable.



Disc,poss standard front,box they come in has just Austin Rover on it and a part number,have to do some detective work.Adaptor plate and pads /caliper



Close up of caliper,Girling in make,but had a VW logo on it to me looks very similar to MK2 Golf GTI rear caliper [?]





A couple of picture of the adaptor plate mounted using the bolt holes used to retain the half shaft (3 in total)



Picture of a quick mock up of the set up.
The deal also included an axle,fitted with an alloy diff cover,i assume SD1,if someone goes to the trouble of doing that does it contain someting special LSD or different ratio [:D][:D] Will have to wait as mothers day here and real busy visiting in laws ect ect!!

Yes John,
thats's an alloy SD1 rear plate - doesn't rust...
They seem to have plugged the position where the Watt link pivots with a bolt..?

Hi Terry,
Will try and trace by part number on the box and post on here when i know,could poss be rear MGF i suppose look to thin to be front Maestro / Montego.

Are the caliper mounting brackets aluminum or steel ? Be interested as to what hand brake arrangement you come up with.

Caliper mounting are steel and appear to be very well made.


The adaptor is approx 5/16" or 8mm thick,the center hole is tapped the outer to 2 not,gives a perfect fit and 3 hole location.

As for handbrake cable,there in lie's the fun in setting something like this up [;)] Can see me walking around a few VW swap meets with a caliper in one hand a tape measure in the other [:)]

Teenagers are invaluable aren't they. I've got a couple of teenage daughters myself, or as we like to call them, "The IT Department".
That setup could be just the ticket for me. As well as for my 7 I am working on a 4 wheel disc setup for my ZA Magnette and the MGA Twin-Cam rear calipers I bought on E-bay turned out to be from an XK150.
This would be an easy solution...if not quite period![:)]

<b><font color="blue">From looking at this, would you be able to make the bracked yourself, given the right dimentions and then use a spare set of TR7 calipers that you have knocking around?
I do so happen to have these spare calipers in my garage and a rear axel knocking around that I could use as a mock up. From the questions about the dimentions I take it that I am not the only person to have these kinds of thoughts?[?]
I would however, look at making the Caliper mounting bracket out of a solid square or make the end bits a little thicker, due to the pressure that will be on it when the breaks are put on.</font id="blue"></b>

The only problem with using TR7/8 calipers is that bthey have no provision for a handbrake.

Hi,
Having consulted the <u>'I.T Department'</u>[:D] [:D] they kindly showed me which things to hi light and what to click onto BUT refused to do it for me [V] as they found it far to funny watching me than doing it themselves [:D] i am sorry for the roughness of this but the dimesions are resonably accurate give or take a mm or 2 Anyone wishing to make this would poss adviced to make a mock up out of wood or MDF a lot easier to work with [;)] and then check fitment.



As well as the caliper, almost certain is MK2 Golf GTI, you will need the carrier to bolt too.

Why not dispense with the handbrake mechanism and cable completely and put another master cylinder inline with the rear brakes and have a hydraulic setup?

I've done this modification on both a Mk2 and an E-Type Jag a lot of years ago to get around their terrible handbrake mechanisms. Works a treat.
