5spd Gearbox oil filler

Postby rodmarklew » 22 Aug 2018 16:34

Hi there,

I have a 1982 UK TR7 DHC but for the life of me I cannot find the Gearbox oil filler hole, I have been under the car, looked within the engine bay from above on the drivers and passengers side, and I still cannot find it - HELP!

Where is it? any pics would be helpful as my haynes manual is no use with this.

Pics/descriptions - being new to car DIY I am a bit stuck on this one.

Thank you Rod

This picture is taken from the LH side of the car. On the right you can see the front of the gearbox mount and on the left the exhaust downpipe mount. And in between the filler hole

Its a fun job, especially if you have a larger exhaust. Getting the plug out is not too bad, getting it back in needs judicious us of a couple of fingers in the space to try and get it started. Note it is a filler/level plug but not easy to get a tube with squeezy bottle ( as Castrol type bottles) in. Last tine I changed from ATF to Castrol Syntans (no appreciable improvement, just emptied the wallet) and used an electric (12V) oil pump as it was much easier from the side of the car once the tube was in.

I use a one liter oil bottle with a 1/2" plastic hose attached to the outlet from the top.

I feed the hose down the side of the box, then slip underneath & put the end of the hose into the hole. Gravity then does the rest. With this system you spill less when the box is full, as you have not pumped oil much over full.

Use one of the modern manual transmission fluids, they really are an improvement on the old stuff, or auto transmission fluid.

thanks for the super tips especially oil. I did read the old threads about using Auto Trans oil and will not being going down this route, ordered some Castrol SMX which I understand from the previous owner is what he used.

so looks like I am in for a fun weekend of bruised fingers and ego, however every time I see my TR I smile so no worries :-)

I put my oil in from below with a oil can and a plastic hose on the tip. Car already up on jack stands to drain the oil and what ever other maintenance and inspections needed. It takes a few pumps but little leakage at fill point. I had the oil can and plastic hose had lying around but cheaply bought at hardware stores or pet stores that handle aquariums. No expensive equipment needed or unnecessary removal of centre console stuff to get at it from above. Does exercise the thumb to squirt in required amount though.

Good choice but (at least over here) no longer available and replaced by Castrol Syntrans Multivehicle 75W90 which I have been using for some years now
