Vermin spamming scum

Postby Cobber » 08 Dec 2014 14:14

I see we are again under siege by the inbred, lowlife, feral hordes of vermin spamming scumbags, peddling their worthless counterfeit tatt.
If indeed of course the "goods" (and I use the term loosely) on offer do actually exist, it's more than likely a fraud scam to get into the unwitting punter's credit card account in order to clean it out!

A few months ago, the MGF/TF forum of which I'm one of the moderators, also had a sh!tstorm of spam, seeing as, in this case, most of this came out of China, it was decided to ban everything coming out of China.
This has greatly reduced the amount of spam that "The T Bar" forum has to deal with.

Maybe denial of access based on country of origin is something to be looked at.
Would it be possible for certain countries that are hotbeds of spam, and unlikely to be home to any legitimate members be blocked?

Given that China is trying to be taken seriously as a worthwhile manufacturing source, not just a supplier of shoddy crap and they want to be seen as a good honourable place to do business with, surely it's time to clean up their act and deal with this menace to their reputation.
China is pretty quick to execute any miscreants, and as such it would be consistent (in the current Chinese judicial context) that capital punishment would not be an excessive response for those found guilty of spamming, as it should be considered a threat to the national interest, by damaging their reputation as a place to do business.
Now from a Western prospective this may seem extreme, but not so in China.
If they do start to bump off scamming spamming scum, I for one, won't complain!

I find that it's very hard to believe that this sort of spamming is really worth their trouble, has anyone here ever purchased from a spammer, I doubt it, so it would only cost China a few packets of bullets to ruin the business model of the spammers.

Please note that none of this post is directed at Chinese people, I'm referring to China the political entity, not the Chinese people.

Now, now, Cobber,

We really must be a little more tolerant of people, even if they are scammers! I must admit that I was not real happy while I was cleaning up all of their post, as they were posting faster than I could fix them. They finally gave up for now.

Most of the scammers that have been hitting us are from Canada, not China.

We tried closing the Forum for a while, but that really just hurt us more than inconvenienced the scammers. I guess we are doomed to deal with the scammers as best we can for now.

Could I suggest appointing more admins? This would minimise the time the spammers have exposure and therefore the desirability of posting ...

If the spam is automated, can something be added (one of those hard to read numbers or an extra step in the posting process) to slow them down? Or maybe we get their IP address and reverse spam them. Every time you post, you get some kind of email verification. A bit more trouble for us but a headache for them.

A point of clarity, if I may. In China, they charge the condemned for the bullet. A discount for disposal is applied for the harvested body parts, however. The executioner is highly trained to place the bullet path where valuable components will not be damaged.

Would it not be easier to manually admit new members than erase spam?

Don't know what it takes to do either but I am sure the moderators do have better things to do and as such am grateful for the work they put in. I'm sure when this forum system was devised, spam was not a big issue but:

1) It (spam) isn't going away.

2) We do need new members and opening and closing the forum isn't going to solve the spam problem and can't be good for attracting said members.

If there is no better option built in or can be added then we may have to go to a more modern system as much as I like the format of this one.

While there are other forums it would be a crying shame to let this one die on the vine. If we moved to a new system and couldn't import the archives etc. to the new one we could lock this one and have a link on the new one to access this one? No idea what's involved, just throwing ideas on the wall.

Hey merv,
To answer your questions;

-It would take just as much work to verify/delete '"real" peeps from the spam accounts (90% are prolly fake ....)

- the forum dates way back to 2002 , so lots of things have evolved since the creation of the site , so yes the spam will never go away , we just have to find a way to close the loophole that didn't exist (as bad) as bad back then ....

- there is not a big volume of "new car" buyers in wedge world [;)] but we always want to accept new members, (and sometimes the old ones will move on as cars get sold ect....) however this isn't a business, so closing registration in order to keep things in line might be a eventuality until the problem on the site gets fixed.
-And even if we do have a lockdown for new members, the forum isn't going anywhere !!!
- The site will eventually have no-choice but to get a re-bop sooner than later , defiantly some things will have to change (like log ins for new accounts) how-ever the concept should stay familiar , and ALL the DB would be transferred!
