If you go to
http://www.heritage-motor-centre.co.uk/ ... umber.html

you can get a Certificate of Build with details of your car.

Send in the VIN No.erc & a £40 cheque to get the info

Both my 1980 and 1979 build date cars have it stamped on a plate on the door (drivers side). Was that something only on newer cars? If so when did it start?

It's a rolling 40 year exemption so it's another few years for the DHC's[:(]

It may cost £40 but it could save you £225 if your car sat around for long time before it was registered.

UK cars did not have these plates, I guess there was some regulatory requirement to put the plate on US spec cars?

AFAIK the only way to get all the details including proof of build date (as opposed to registration date) for a UK car is the Heritage Certificate. However the Heritage Centre also offer a Dating Letter service for £21 which gives you just that, the date of build, on headed paper. Looks like the cheapest option.

Think you have 5 years to save up the £21 or £40 depending option the amount of Beer cans you can recycle.

1p per Aluminum x 2100 cans @ 10 cans per weekend = 4 years

Only draw back is the extra new trousers you'll need due to the belly expanding [:D]

I 'm Scots too - ask for a Certificate for Christmas or birthday[^]
