Electric aerial

Whilst the interior is out of my project car I thought now would be a good time to change to an automatic electric aerial.
Anyone have any suggestions for the power source, wiring etc

There should be wiring back there already. Just hook it to a fairly new radio

Is there? Would love to know more as this is something I have been thinking about doing as well. My Philips radio cassette has the aerial trigger wire.

As I understand it, you need a permanent (fused) live, an earth & the trigger from the R/C or a separate switch. In a TR8 I guess you could easily pick up a live from the battery, but what about a TR7?

There is a purple wire that feeds the interior lights near the base of the right side "B" pillar that I tied into for the 1977 Coupe.

On the later cars there should be power in the harness near the aerial or you can tap the boot light power.

On my 1979 car the PO used the trunk light as a source of power for am electric aerial that is operated with a switch on the center console. Automatic would be better but this works.

There is a specific wire just for it that connects to the Front

I've deleted my electric aerial, then patched and painted over. I'm fitting an after-market interior aerial as I'm not a fan of the mast breaking up the "lines" of the rear quarter. The radio actually doesn't get too much use, as I normally just plug in the Ipod. There is an online source called...tune trapper that will sell you a hidden aerial for about the same price as an electric one.\

As for the electric one, yes, grab power from the trunk light, then worm the switch wire and radio signal through to the head unit. The head unit should have a "remote on" wire (blue and white I think) or your separate amplifier may have one. As for the ground...mine was in the trunk/boot (FHC).

It was my understanding too that there was a specific wire for the electric aerial, on the left hand side of the centre console:

Don, can't quite figure out your picture. Is that in the boot? Is that plug part of the original loom?

Should have qualified the pic.
The bottom loom with the 3 wires is stock and the connection is of my own used to connect to the pigtail of the aerial

Having a look in the left corner of the boot(trunk) and there is a larger diameter white wire with a black tracer. Is that an ignition or auxiliary live feed?

That's the switch wire for the aerial to go up and down when the radio is on

I always understood that there was no inbuilt wiring facility on UK cars for an electric aerial. Such luxuries would have been for Jaguars and similar, although some of the Acclaim models had them. I believe they actually use quite a bit of power, albeit for a very short period, so the wiring needs to be reasonably substantial. I guess if you have a convertible and no hardtop you could utilize the heating rear window wiring which I understand is in situ. supercass

The wiring is there for an automatic aerial. The aerial goes up when the radio is switched on and down when it is switched off, IF the dealer install the correct radio, i.e. Jaguar.

When I changed to a better radio, the internal connection did not work with the aerial. I installed a DPDT rocker switch in the heater console, got power from the cigarette lighter and connected it to one of the center connectors on the switch. I then connect a ground wire to the other center connector. Now comes the tricky part. Run two wires to the aerial motor and the tag ends to the upper or lower connectors of the switch. Cut two short pieces of wire and connect them to the some terminals that you just used. Now, CRISS-CROSS the wires and connect them to the two empty terminals on the switch.

When you push the the switch one way a positive charge goes through one of the wires and if you push it the other way, the power is reversed.

Never managed to find the wiring in mine. I did fit an electric aerial some years ago, wiring it independently and ended up removing it because of its dismal performance. It is possible / likely that US cars had different wiring in this respect. Does it terminate inside the rear wing? supercass
