TR7 tow bars

Postby paulheritage » 16 Oct 2013 13:54

I have recently been looking at tow bars for TR7's and appears to be many variations and would like some feedback. I presume there were no actual factory options, just dealer options?

Here are 3 different ones I've come across so far, and would appreciate some input about the type other people have on their TR7's and any advice.

The first one is one I picked up from eBay recently:

This one was advertised as a factory option:

This one is one Garry Yorke (hope you don't mind me showing this) has:

This one is currently on eBay which says it came off a Grinnall:

It seems evident to me that the factory option tow bar is the strongest and safest. It is possible that it is short of a couple or more of reinforcing plates for but not limited to the member immediately behind the tow bar ball. Possibly a Witter, rebranded as Unipart at the time?? It needs de rusting and painting though!! supercass

This is the one I got, as you can see I have added extra bar at the rear end

all the holes are already in the car for it, no need to drill

looking again it looks 2 and 3 are the same

just the front bar opposite way around and some with the extra supports.

My car has the rear cross bar fitted from the 1st bar shown - although the lengthwise bar is missing, I have similar bar from another car in store. However the boot floor / spare wheel well has evidence of where it has been slightly damaged where the length bar would have been bolted on. I really don't think a 'spare wheel well' is a good enough place for that bar to connect to the car - has anyone come up with a better idea?? I've no immediate plans for any towing......but would like to be prepared.

Usually the factory tow bars are the best, you have to be a bit careful adding more strengthening to the mounts as the more floor space covered can result in far more damage if your car is subjected to a bump from behind [:0]
Basically the bars are manufactured to take down load force and pull strength.
That's my 2 pence worth today [:D]

The extra bar I added at the back as far I an aware should be there

even the holes in the floor are there with the rubber grommets in them

Now here's a question, do they all fit on a car with USA bumpers?

Only I have one that I've never got round to fitting and one day might.

From the pictures mine looks like it is the same as Garry's one.

And now for something completely different ...

Made in Belgium (by GDW)in 1979, very well made and a straight fit.
Was a local dealer option over here, but rather rare nowadays
