I've just fitted new bushes to the remote gearchange housing as the original's had disappeared completely leaving the bottom of the housing to rest on the prop shaft. Now I find that I can't select most of the gears. Anyone got any ideas as to what's wrong? Lever moves backwards and forwards, and sideways to the right but there seems to be no engagement from the gearbox. The bush bolts should be tight, right?

At a guess whilst changing the bushes the mech has become disconected from the selector rod, it go through a round bush on the remote. If you look from above, towards the box you will see a hole in the remote, look whats going on poss with a mirror and you will see poss not connected.

And from underneath, the part on the right is the selector shaft into the box, the part on the left is part of the remote, they join through the bush this I guess is where your problem is

My guess as well. It happened to me, easy for the pin to get out of the hole while you're playing around getting the bolts back in.

Indeed very likely that this is what happened, but very easy to rectify

Me too. Been there, done it, wrecked the T Shirt.

As per others, take it all apart again and it'easily visible to see what needs doing.

IIRC, I removed the propshaft to make some room for my long fingers.

well thanks everyone for your replies - yes you are all correct, the linkage had come apart just as you said. Thanks very much for all your help. Will re assemble once new reverse switch arrives, seems little point doing it now only to have to move things around to fit the switch.

Hi, Well I sorted out the problem and thanks to all of you. BUT, I stripped the threads on the rear engine mounting (the threads in the extension case). So - can I replace the extension case with the gearbox in the car - or does it have to come out. Is it worth me taking the case to a workshop to replace the threads or to buy a new case?
