Now it is not just the 7 playing up, the 8 is at it too.

My son has it down in Kiama, South of Sydney. He is currently instructing new officer cadets, mostly mature age doctors, nursers & other qualified people in a little seamanship & other such things naval. This is at the old naval college in Jervis Bay.

He recently noticed a bubble in the transmission oil cooler hose. He ordered some new transmission hose, from the local parts shop, & fitted it today.

Having done some brake, & exhaust work as well as fit the oil cooler hose, he went for a run.

After 25Km he was very happy with the brakes, & his new 2.5" twin exhaust, until the huge cloud of smoke appeared in his rear view mirror. The new hose had a 3" split in it, pumping oil everywhere.

The bloke who built the transmission for us said this happens all the time, as some suppliers don't know the difference & supply fuel hose, which looks & feels remarkably similar.

The car can't be blamed for this one, but do be careful if buying hose to run to oil coolers, or the same could happen to you. He is now off to Pertech, one of the specialists hydraulic companies dealing with the earth moving industries, to make sure he has the right stuff this time. Only hassle is the 180Km round trip, but worth the effort.

Cobber he did talk about using it to power a catapult to sling a brick through their front window.

But he's a sailor, & you know what they say about them being all talk. We used to reckon while they were bitching their heads off, loudly, there wasn't much to worry about.

The time to watch out was when they went quiet.

Stop press.

The boy, after being told the hose was probably fuel hose, went & pulled it out of the bin this morning.

It actually has "Transmission" printed on it. Nothing else, no manufacturers name, country of origin, nothing.

It looks like the dreaded quality of our Asian neighbours auto parts manufacturers has struck again.

Those Asian neighbours have the ability to make the very best but because of their lower costs also the very worst of components which is where the "head line" news usually dwells. Any part the lacks any identifiers is not going to be a quality part. The really scary part (especially for those flying) is these parts are also showing up on military aircraft around the world including Air Force One.

The 8 now has new hose on the cooler, & it has exceeded that 25Km test this time.

He was advised to never buy anything, particularly hydraulic hose & gear, from a US manufacturer that does not have Made in USA printed on it.

It appears that the US have some southern neighbours, where some US manufacturers are having some gear produced. Like our northern neighbours, much of this production is of rather doubtful quality.

We will have to be careful. About 40 years ago, in the days when the term "Jap crap" was mostly true, they built a manufacturing city, & named it USA. For some time we were getting "Jap crap", labeled made in USA

I guess the Gates fuel hose, that failed in the 7 after just one year, of no more than 2 PSI may have come from south of the boarder, down ------- way, as the old song goes.
