Oldest part?

Postby TR Tony » 09 Aug 2012 12:18

OK as I am sure you are all aware some parts of the TR7/8 range can be readily & accurately dated from codes or date stamps. This is a bit anoracky but I have to confess that recently I have had an increasing interest in spotting early parts, both from the start of production & examples of early parts from production line changes like trim.

An example - last weekend Roy & I were looking at John Wood's genuine TR7 Sprint (1977 build). One of the quarterlight windows carries the Triplex date code for May 1973!! Now that car was totally rebuilt by Robsport so the glass may not be original to the car but that is the earliest part I have ever seen regardless.

So go on - anyone got a really early part either on your car or in your collection of bits?

That quarter light window will probably be hard to beat [;)]

My glass only dates back to '76, 1 year before it was made but the nut that holds the steering wheel on my car dates back to 1966. [:D]

Triplex date code:

TRIPLEX windows manufactured in the 1950's through the late 1970's can be dated with the 'TRIPLEX CODE' stamped into the glass.

If you know the decade your car was produced, just look for two dots in the TRIPLEX logo on the glass.

One dot above T, R, E, or X gives the quarter of the year the glass was manufactured:
T is Jan, Feb, March,
R is April, May, June,
E is July Aug, Sept, and
X stands for Oct, Nov, Dec.

To find the year of manufacture, look at the nine letters in the word TOUGHENED.
One dot below a letter gives the year of the decade:
T is 1,
O is 2,
U is 3,
G is 4,
H is 5,
E is 6,
N is 7,
E is 8,
D is 9.

If there is no dot, the year is a zero.

This code also works if you have a TRIPLEX window with the word LAMINATED instead of TOUGHENED.

Hi,

Was suprised when you showed me John's car on Sunday [:0]

My FHC is 76 and so is the glass, the DHC is 81 and has 1980 glass in her, trims all seem to be 80 or 81.My old 79 FHC has 79 glass so nothing intresting there.

Handy way to check if original doors fitted or had a later 'donor' door fitted.

NOTE to self take glasses to check glass at Malvern this year !!!

Cheers John

You'll be going around checking everyones glass
John to see if it fits with the car. Seriously though, it is a very
simple way to check any potentiall purchase.

When I was taking apart my TR8 coupe I had 1978/1977 glass, headliner from 1977. The door panels were 1977 with lights. Most interesting was a sticker under the padding for the headliner that had a QC OK mark and date of Nov. 78 with a hand written LHS V8.
