Overheating (v8 related, but maybe not)

My car is a V8 but the problem should hit a note with all owners...

Had no related ssues with the car for 25 years but recently had problems with coolant temperature. Had a burst of coolant from under the bonnet and since then had erratic temperature and little heat within the car.

Cut a long story short, but the car had high temperature but bypassed the heater (joined the 2 hoses) and now running perfect at exactly half-way on the gauge.

I then tried flushing the heater matrix and all seem okay, with no leaks. Plumbed back to normal and still overheating. Put back to bypass and okay again.

Is this normal for a heater matrix failure ?

I'd suggest there is a blockage in the heater matrix acting like a closed thermostat.
