Has anyone fitted one of these http://www.retrosoundusa.com/products/category/id/1 to their 7/8? I like that it's a classic look but even more that it's a very small unit and may be a perfect fit for my Spider. Does anyone know the dimensions of the original radio?I'm kinda frustrated with the fit of the current JVC model that's in there right now.

Never fitted one but have seen similar in classics over here. In a standard car not sure about the LED display, back in the day a digital watch was a novity !

An alternative is a second hand radio of Fleabay and have a I Pod / MP3 interface installed inside it

Or get a FM interface that plugs into the ariel lead and allows you to use a I Pod or MP3

I put one in my TR8 this spring. I does fit well, though they use HUGE connectors for the wiring, and that takes a bit of fiddling to find a place for it.

I removed the center console and installed it out of the car, then put the console back with the radio in place. I purchase both the "euro-style small faceplate" and the universal faceplate. I used the universal faceplate and the old metal one to sandwich around the console, and used the euro faceplate to finish it off.

My original plan was to glue the universal faceplate inside the console, but started to worry about the glue holding up. But give that the radio is pretty well supported by the tight fit, that probably would have worked fine.

The display is hard to read in the daylight with the top down.

I mounted the SD card reader in the glove box.

Another option with this unit is that you can separate the knobs and face from the rest of unit, and mount them angled to each other. You could then have the face not be angled up so much. If I ever pull it out again, I may look at doing that.

A shame you don't have the original radio which was a high end (for the time) AM/FM stereo cassette deck , Panasonic (internally). Not good for the itunes crowd though. I believe the 30th Anniversary Edition had the same radio as part of their $900 free option package.

That original radio sure looks nice! I'd take one in a heartbeat, even though I mainly listen to my iPod. I'll have to keep the Retrosound unit in mind for later.

I think it would be cool to have an 8 track in my car. I saw one once on ebay (with Triumph decal), but i didn't bid on it (still kicking myself over that one).

Had an Akai reel to reel with integrated 8 track. I could put all my friends 8 tracks on a reel with 8 hours of music on slow speed. Great for those late night parties where one was in no shape to change reels. Those where the days my friend...I'd thought they'd never end.....

Cheap, easy to install and fits well. Lil down on power, but I added a EQ/Amp (under the glove box ;] ). Heck, I didnt wanna spend too much for a radio that'll either get stolen, or get wet (in the rain) [8D]

Johnny, if only they made one like that with no cassette and an iPod hookup!

I think for now I'll stick with the JVC that came with the car. It sticks out a little but not bad. Someday I'll get around to mounting it better and covering up the bit that sticks out.

Could you show a pic of that radio in your car? By chance to you know how deep it is?

I eventually want to change out the radio in my car, but most radios I have seen still have to sit at an angle to go in our cars.

I would really like to have the face flush / parallel with the dash around it.

I sure can/will soon. It has a small chassis, one reason I bought it. Plus it has a jack to plug in a portable-CD player, which I love. And I still have lots of cassettes so I listen to radio or cassettes or cd's when i want. Like I said, its not a powerful unit, but I added a eq/amplifier (under the glove box) and two additional speakers behind the seats. I only paid like $30-$40 buk's for it (brand new)so Im not concerned if it gets wet or damaged. I just couldnt see spending big buck's for a radio for a drop-top. Next chance I get Ill snap off a couple pic's. [:D]

The OEM radio in FI Spyder's post is one of Triumph's best North American systems for 1980. And I have had one in place since showroom delivery. I also have the radio manufacturer's alignment and service manual.

This particular radio was made for Audio Systems Incorporated of Louisville, KY - their model number ASI DB-9300. But it was Made In Japan. As far as I can tell, ASI no longer exists.

It is not the "official parts list" AM/FM/Cassette unit for the 30th Anniversary Edition though dealers often substituted. The ASI has a much better tape deck than the one listed on the 30th Anniversary parts list - but is not nearly as good a radio (unfortunately for these days). The official 30th Anniv stereo did not include a tape rewind function. You had to eject and turn the tape over - then use the (not so) fast forward function. But the AM and FM performance was excellent.

How do I know? I bought my current/2nd 1980 30th Anniversary Ed. new with the ASI radio installed by the dealer (Calif FI version, factory AC). That was after my first (also new) 1980 30th Anniversary Ed. with the official parts list radio installed (Federal carb version, no AC) was essentially squashed to half its original length by drunk truck driver. The car was destroyed. I was not. Tough little car!

I have a copy of the original JRT options list sheet for both the 30th Anniversary Edition and the Spider Edition as well as the 30th Anniversary advertising and the ASI radio service manual published by ASI.
