Front hub problem

I bought one of the TSI big bearing front hub kits off ebay a while back. Complete set up, unused.

I fitted it to the car a few months ago, easy enough. Since then I have had a problem in that after a few miles a small amount of play develops in the bearing, this only happens on the left side hub, the right side is fine.

I have stripped it out twice, repacked with grease & reassembled, using the correct torque settings. All is well for the first few miles then play develops. I really cannot see why.

Anyone used this kit or got any ideas?

Does it have the split pin & lock cap fitted to prevent the nut from undoing? Can you just nip the nut up to get rid of the play? It's quite normal to have todo this from time to time. The torque setting is so light it is easier to do it by feel unless you have a very sensitive torque wrench.

Yes Peter, the locking cap over the nut & split pin are in place. I have tried tightening by hand & by using a torque wrench. Each time the hub seems to be correctly set, but within 15 to 20 miles a small amount of play returns.

I can quite understand that the hub might need nipping up from time to time, but less than 20 miles does seem excessive!

There may be more people on the WWWedge mailing list (tr8@mercury.lcs.mit.edu) that have fitted these. Ted also used to monitor and respond occassionally.

Could it be that in that LHS hub the bearing recesses sit closer together?
Resulting in the bearings not being tightened properly?

Or maybe the axle's stub is worn?

I don't know what a "big bearing kit" is but are you sure the races are seated properly/completely?

Thanks for the thoughts, guys. I don't think the stub axle is worn Theo, there was no play in the standard hub/bearing set up that I took off. I will have to have a close look to make sure the races are seated properly. Clearly I am going to have to take this off again so maybe I should put the old one back on!!

The Wedge mailing list is a good idea, Marsu, I will try that - like you say Ted himself has been known to appear on there so maybe he will see the post.

Before we end this thread could someone let us know what a big bearing kit is and what it is suppose to do?

Ted Schumacher of TSI Automotive over in the States takes a pair of standard hubs, & machines the seats for the outer bearing races so that you can fit a larger outer bearing (inner bearing remains the same).

The kits include new bearings of the correct size, new seals & a sleeve for the stub axle.

To quote the TSI website "This keeps the hub from distorting" I think this is supposed to help with things like the dreaded wheel wobble, and provide a stronger hub set up if you use the car hard.

I cannot comment on the results yet as I have not yet had time to find out why one of my hubs keep developing a small amount of play.

I will report further if/when I have time to investigate more.

I think that Ted is great and has helped our cars immensely!

That being said, I have heard through the grape vine that from time to time, some of the machined hub are just a little off center. Try rotating it and checking it for runout. I know that Ted will replace a defective hub.
