Taken from the dolomite site..... they need numbers so that they can get stickers printed etc and work with the authorities at Brighton.

for this first run this will not be a official run but run as people getting together for a drive out as to aviod any insurances etc. if the run catches on it will be considered next year. i gather

have dug out a couple of old route books, and am working on some amendments. I hope to have perhaps a norf London and a sarf London start which join at a pre-determined time (all being well) somewhere in the Sevenoaks, Reigate, Limpsfield corridor just south of the M25. There will also be a couple of other "joining points" later on where Kent and Sussex/East Surrey owners can link in if they don't want to come up to London for the start, or cannot commit the morning, or whatever.

Been a while since I did this - I used to do quite a lot of it. It's good to get the old brain working again.

There will be plenty of refuelling opportunities (for car and occupants), and to make it interesting, and I am negotiating with Bewl Valley to get the cars onto their foreshore for a photo opp about lunchtime, if I can pull it off.

Am speaking to the Brighton authorities too, about getting onto The Drive on arrival; but we will need critical mass for them to agree to this. So tell your mates everybody, because this will be a good day out.

just as a taster, and to remind anyone up for this the Dolomite group need to know by the end of the month who will be attending

They have proof driven the route recently and as a result have made a number of significant changes from what was whizzing around in my head previously. I think the changes are for the better, and I am now broadly very happy with how things have turned out. I have had lots and lots of conflicting thoughts on how to do things, but think now I have a formula that will work, and work well. There are two or three critical bits that I have to tie up, not least with Brighton and Hove Council. I also have to speak to The Ace, but below are the bones of it.

The event divides neatly into three phases. I cannot really believe that I have made this rod for my own back, and by golly some help will be needed to marshall things on the day; but I have ended up with three starts - hear me out.

So, Phase 1 - The Start

Three points of starting:

North London, Bucks, Herts and further afield cars will start at The Ace Cafe on the A406 North Circular Road. I need to work on the timings but these cars, who have furthest to go, will need to be away by about 9.30am, so will be congregating from around 8.30am. I will need a volunteer to marshall this start (I had sort of written Ken's name against this rather presumptiously old friend ).

Kent, South London, & North Sussex cars will start from Greenwich Park in south London and will congregate from the General Wolfe Statue down the main drive. This start also has a fully operational cafe for those requiring sustenance. I will marshall this start though some help will be appreciated (see below under 'marshalls').

The third start depends on numbers and interest. But for our Surrey, A3/M3 corridor, and Berks friends, there can be a start at Box Hill cafe on the A25 near Leatherhead, which happily also (fairly obviously)has a good cafe. If this start becomes a goer, I will need a marshall or two.

The Box Hill and the Greenwich cars will leave at about 10.00, so as to not be miles ahead of the Ace cars.

The Ace cars will proceed clockwise around the North Circular, via the A13, and A102, through the Blackwall Tunnel, and via Kidbrooke to The A20. They will then follow exactly the same route as the Greenwich cars, albeit slightly behind them. This will take them via Brands Hatch race circuit through Wrotham and Borough Green where the route will turn south through the Weald of Kent and some of the nicest countryside the county has to offer. There the route turns south west and down skirting tothe north west of Tunbridge Wells.

The Box Hill cars will meander via the A25, etc down the Horsham Road to Crawley, and then via Copthorne and Felbridge to East Grinstead, and thus across country towards Tunbridge Wells.

Which brings us neatly to:

Phase 2 - The Merge

All three routes will proceed down to an area just north west of Tunbridge Wells. They should, if it all comes together by lumpy custard, arrive in this area by late morning/lunchtime. The routes will then join at Groombridge Place(http://www.groombridge.co.uk/) and Enchanted Forest. We will spend some time here and becasue of this I am negotiating a concession on the entry price for cars as it is worth it tenfold, and there is an excellent cafe. This will be a chance to get out of the cars and chat and wander around this wonderful venue. Which brings us to:

Phase 3 - The Push For Glory

Cars will now, altogether leave Groombridge and proceed over the rugged beauty of the Ashdown Forest through some of the best scenery in the south of England via Uckfield and Maresfield to Lewes in Sussex, where we will turn through (yes through, as in under) the south downs via the Cuilfail Tunnel, and will emerge on to the A27 just outside Newhaven. From there its down the A27, left via the University campus, and into Brighton Town Centre, by St Peters Church and The Royal Pavillion, and thence the seafront, and the FINISH. Arrival eta mid-afternoon. If it is like today was weather-wise, you will want to stay a while. Cars then are free to do as they wish and can leave at will. If the Portsmouth, Hants posse wish to trundle along the A27, to join us they will be warmly welcomed.

Marshalls

I need a couple of Marshalls at each start to corral people and generally get them away on time, also to monitor pace etc. en route. I say two because if for any reason one marshall has a problem (car or otherwise), someone can step up to the plate. The two can then go front and rear when driving so as to keep a steady pace. I will be provioding two way radios for the marshall cars to speak to each other.

So there it is. I will find a way with Ken of distributing detailed route information (which I have yet to write up, of course). I will also be setting out a few ground rules.

The Kent tr Register are also getting involved with this now so the momentum is building and lets hope they can make this with our help an annual event

Okay, here we go.

Again taken from the dolomite forum

First, the official bit. Because this is not an "official" road run, the route below is merely a suggestion. It is entirely up to participants whether the follow all of it, some of it or none of it at all. You are free to join and leave the route at any time, or to take any other route that takes your fancy. That's the beauty of this event - its totally relaxed and laissez faire.

This anyway is the SUGGESTED Route, in that its the route that I will be driving. Some approximate times are shown for people who may wish to dip in and out of the event during the day.

So, the start - Greenwich Park

I will be arriving at Greenwich somewhere between 9.00 and 9.30am. I will park as far up the drive as I can towards the cafe, which is almost opposite the Observatory. I warn you that there are parking restrictions in the Park 24/7 and the wardens are the most zealous in the UK, so please remember to Pay and Display. The objective is to have a cuppa and a bit of brekky as suits.

I will be leaving the Park at 10.15am

The route will come out of the Park, across Blackheath, through Blackheath village to Lee Green, where we will turn left and proceed to the A20 via Kidbrooke.

We wil follow the A20 to the M25 junction, where we will take the 3rd exit signposted for Farningham and west Kingsdown and Brands Hatch Motor Racing Circuit. We will proceed along the A20 through West Kingsdown and will pass Brands Hatch at approx 10.45 am.

We will continue along the A20 to the roundabout at Wrotham (pronounced Root-ham), where we will take the A227 (signpost Borough Green). We will travel through Borough Green and thence the villages Ightham and Shipbourne.

Just after Shipbourne we will turn right onto Hildenborough Lane (sign post - Powder Mills); and then left onto Ridings Lane following the signs for Hildenborough until we arrive in the picturesque village of Leigh. We will turn left onto the B245 through Leigh. We will be at Leigh at approx 11.20 am.

After Leigh station we take the left turn signposted Penshurst onto the B2176. we follow this into Penshurst vilklage and then turn right onto the B2188, and proceed via Smarts Hill and Fordcombe to the A264. We turn left on the A264 and then immediately right off of it again onto the B2110 heading towards Groombridge. We follow this road into Groombridge until we reach Groombridge Place.

PLEASE MIND THE SPEED BUMPS!!

We will park in the upper car park at Groombridge Place, and will arrive at around 11.45 am.

We will wait there for the other two routes to join us.

Part Two - For Cars coming from The Ace Cafe

Assemble at the Ace from 8.30 am for brekky, gallon of tea etc.

Cars will need to start leaving at approx 9.30 am sharp.

They will proceed clockwise around the North Circular, thence via the A12, past the Olympic Stadium (on the left) to the Blackwall Tunnel approach. Through the Tunnel and then follow the signs for the A20 and M20, which will take you off to the right hand side, via some very tight width barriers through the infamous (for all the wrong reasons) Kidbrooke Ferrier Estate to the traffic lights where you go straight over and pick up the A20.

From this point the route is identical to that set out above in my last post.

Part Three - for cars starting at Box Hill

You need to be leaving the cafe at about 10.00 am so I leave it to you how much before that you wish to assemble and take on some carbs, etc.

I suggest that you leave the cafe and follow the A24 south, via Dorking and South Holmwood, through Capel to Warnham, where you will turn left onto the A264, following the signs for Crawley. Follow the by-pass around Horsham and at the fourth roundabout turn right folowing the signs for Gatwick and the M23.

Join the M23 northbound for one junction and get off at Junction 10, turning right on the A264 signposted Copthorne and East Grinstead. Follow the A264 to the traffic lights at Felbridge where you turn right on the A22 following the signs for East Grinstead. Stay on the A22 to East Grinstead and then take the left turn by MacDonalds in the centre of the towns one way system on to the A264 signposted for Tunbridge Wells.

THIS TURNING IS VERY EASY TO MISS AND IF YOU DO YOU HAVE TO GO ALL THE WAY AROUND THE ONE WAY SYSTEM AGAIN.

Stay on the A264 through the villages of Holtye and Ashurst until you reach Stone Cross where you turn right onto the B2110 signposted for Groombridge and Groombridge Place. Follow the road into Groombridge and the Place is on the left.

The final chapter - Groombridge to Brighton.

We will be leaving Groombridge at the latest at 2.00 pm

We will turn left from the gates and then left again on the B2118 signposted for Crowborough and Maresfield.

When we reach the B2026 we will turn left. There is a large car park here with stunning views so we may have a quick photo stop. Then it is south on the B2026 to the roundabout where we turn left on the A22 (signpost Uckfield).

We then go A22 and A26 following the signs for Lewes.

At Lewes we turn left following the signs "All Through Traffic" and via the Cuilfail Tunnel we will reach the A27 where we turn right folowing the signs for Brighton. We leave the A27 at th$e Palmer exit and proceed into town on the B270. we follow the signs to the seafront and will try and park in Maderia drive which is the second exit off of the roundabout at the Pier.

I expect to arrive at Brighton about 1 hr 15 mins after we leave Groombridge Place.

There we go - see as many of you as possible on Saturday!

We will have a cordoned off area in the Car Park at Groombridge Place and I have negotiated a hugely reduced entry price for participants in this Run of £5.25 per person (standard price = £9.95 per head). This figure is lower than the Child rate.

The staff at Groombridge have been so helpful that I for one will be going in as I feel I owe them one. Even though I have been before. I can thoroughly recommend Groombridge, especially if you have small people in your car on Saturday who need "airing".

There will however be no charge strictly speaking for just entering the Car Park, but from a moral point of view I do feel somewhat indebted to go in. Others can make their own decisions.

to get the discount you need to be a memeber of any TRIUMPH club so please have a club card ready to show
