Postby humanoid » 20 May 2008 00:08

Are spin-on oil filter adapters only available from VicBrit and Moss?

JClay, would you know if this would fit too? I'm assuming it will.

Looks exactly like the one on my car. Although I only use WIX filters now (51516).

I hope this is ancient history but I had one of the adapters as shown in Humaniod's pic. Got it from Moss motors. This was back in the late 1980's. When I held it in place without the bolt, I could tell that the smaller O-ring was not going to be compressed at all. In fact there was a gap. The design obviously requires that two O-rings be compessed to form the proper seals. With no pressure (actually a small gap) on the center one, the oil would mostly bypass the filter and you'd never know it. I measured as best I could and had a machine shop turn down the outer edge enough so that both O-rings would compress when the bolt was tightened. I called Moss and talked to their tech guy. He was aware of the problem and had little else to say about it! That was 20 years ago. I only hope they fixed it eventually. But I would go with the one pictured in Jclay's post or I would check the Moss style unit very carefully when installing it to make sure it forms two tight seals. FWIW

Very interesting, Scott. I hope for everyone's sake Moss has redesigned it some to make it fit correctly. I was thinking of getting the one from the second link I posted, but they charge $10 for shipping [:0], are you freaking kidding me?!
