Keys - how many different ones?

Here’s where to discuss anything specific about your standard(ish) car or something that applies to the model in general.

Keys - how many different ones?

Postby mmarks » 16 May 2008 08:58

I have 3 different keys for my UK TR7. One for the doors, one for the boot and one for the ignition. Is this standard or should there be less and the locks have been changed at some point?

Sounds like your ignition may have been changed at some point. Normally the key that does the doors also does the ignition, likewise the boot/trunk key also does the glove box.

Just take out the lock barrels from the doors and boot lid. Put the key in one of them and lots of the little brass fingers will stick out (as it's the wrong key). Take a file to the fingers and file them until they are flush.

Repeat on other barrels - your ignition key will now work all locks.
