Condenser

HI,bought a service pack ,leads and distrib cap from rimmers,thought i would give it a good makeover ready for the good weather as the weather man said this weekend was going to be poor(he was wrong).
Put all the bits on ,started her up and you would have thought i had a bucking broncko in my garage,jumping all over the place and the exhaust was kicking out fire and back firing like there was no tomorrow.
Took the cap off and the rotar arm had worn away the middle part inside the cap.
So i have odered another cap,rotar arm from Rimmers.
But i have been told since it is the condenser causing the problem.What say you ??Any help or suggestions would be VERY appreciative.

Hi Mark,
How was she running before you fitted the parts as listed [?] If you have already replaced the dizzy cap have you got the firing order correct (1342) [?] (or plugs leads to the right cylinders) There is'nt a very long carbon electrobe inside a AC Delco cap as stanard. When we serviced these cars in the dealership years ago we always replaced condensor as part of a points change (esp if points were burnt or heavy pitted) Are you sure that the wires are attached to the points corectly and not touching earth [?]

hi John, thanks for reply,yes she was running fine before hand,double checked at time the firing order and that was correct will check other things you have mentioned and get back to you,mind you will have to wait for parts to come before i do anything,

I would first investigate what caused this. Only things I can think of is loose rotor, or rotor not placed correctly. And I heard stories of rather bad (imitation) dizzy caps in the past ...

There are some Lucas rotors that come apart in short order some may last as long as 50 miles. A garage owner brought it to our attention at club meeting. Showed us the difference between good and bad but can't remember difference, sorry. Just be aware there are some bad out there. It's not a manufacturing defect but a bad design.

HI , just replaced new condenser with the old one and runs perfect again.Told Rimmers about problem and they have agreed to reimburse all monies which is fair play to them .So now its back on the road and weather is rubbish again,
