5 Speed diff

5 Speed diff

Guys

Can someone tell me what is the standard diff ratio for a 5 speed TR7 diff and what should I get when I convert my car th V8.

Josa,the standard 5 speed diff ratio is 3.90:1
the recommended ratio for a v8 is 3.08:1 though some have used 3.45:1
for acceleration over top end.

If I remember 3.90 was for a TR7 manual and 3.45 was for an TR7 Auto. 3.08 was for a TR8 Manual and then there is 2.96 (Or something close) for a TR8 auto

There were some recent posts about this and the speedo pinion colours

1980 DHC TR7-V8 (was an 8V, then a Sprint)

But that was only fitted to the 1113 SD1 EFi VanDenPlas Automatics...
A truly great rear axle ratio to have in a highway commuter TR8, imho.

Agreed 100%. I still find myself trying to grab the non-existant 6th gear on motorways. The V8 is so torquey it would easily cope with a lower ratio.

By comparison in our MX5 sport you have to change down from 6th to 5th or even to 4th to overtake comfortably on the motorway.

Actually the diffs are the same in all 5 speed cars, it's the CWP that changes the ratio not the diff [:p][:D]

Hi,
There was a 2.84:1 CWP on fleabay a month or so ago thought about a bid but then there is the problem of tracing down that elusive pinnion collaspble spacer [:(]
