Exhaust options

Am I missing something?? I can't seem to locate many options for my 1976 California TR7 when it comes to exhaust systems.

Can't you just go to a local custom exhaust shop and have them bend one up to your liking?

What kind of options are you looking for? You've got your standard exhaust in mild steel or stainless. Then you can get Monza type exhaust. (Looks good). I've got the Thrush version, looks good, nice rumble at 2500 rpm on the highway cruize but not too loud to tire the ear on long drives. Then there's the Stainless header 4-2-1 with stainless resonator and muffler from S&S Prep. A friend has just gotten this, don't know what sounds like yet but when you looks through the resonator you could see a lot of daylight.

I'm looking for something that I can install at home that would give a nice sound and not break the bank. I had a Monza system on a 1975 VW Bug about 22 years ago........loved it, great improvement in sound.

However, I've heard a number of complaints about the durability (lack of) with the Monza systems.

As compared to a stainless system , yes. Depends on the type of driving you do to. If you do lots of short trip driving, the condensed water in the pipes never gets a chance to get heated and expelled from the exhaust thus rusting through quickly. If your trips are longer the heat from the exhaust evaporates any condensed water in the muffler and it lasts longer. I don't know how it compares to the regular mild steel exhaust. It is painted so the exterior rust should be less. Read a article in a magazine on a guy in the UK that painted his Mini's exhaust with heat resistant paint and his exhaust lasted longer than without the paint because it eliminated the exterior rusting.

One advantage of stainless exhaust is that it can be made from much thinner gauge tubing and therefore much lighter!

And many current custom exhaust places now stock SST exhaust pipes. You just have to find one that has thinner stuff. Some are still using the same heavy gauge stainless, which is waste IMO.
