Head rests!

Can anyone tell me how to get the headrests off the seats ? Yhe Rest book says ' a sharp tug ' - well i've tugged and tugged and no joy. The headrest slides up and down ok - but when it gets to the top it seems to be coming up against a stop. Is there a stop - or am I just not tugging hard enough!

There is a stop and you need to pull harder. After they have been removed a couple of times they seem to come out easier.

Ok thanks - that was quick! My arms are already almost out the sockets with pulling - seat is out the car and I am trying to fit new covers. Back out to the garage for another go after reviving cup of coffee! Thanks again.

If the seats are out of the car you can reach the locking tab from the bottom of the seat back if you undo the back trim cover...

There is a wedge shaped bit of steel, that is pushed into the bottom
of the head rest tube, after the thing is in place. This catches
on the frame, acting as a stop, when you try to pull the head rest
out.

I'd removed them from mine, by unclipping the bottom rear of the
seat cover, & getting at them with pliers some time back.

The motor trimmer proudly told me, that he had found a couple, &
installed them for me, when he recovered my seats. He was so pleased
with himself for finding them for me.

Damn.
Its going to need a few very sharp tugs to get them out, I think.

Well -no amount of 'tugging' was going to shift that thing, and yes I felt there was risk of damaging the headrest. As said above - I peeled back the seat cover and whacked it with a bit of wood - and out it popped. And yes - the wedge of steel has been discarded! Many thanks for all the answers!

The trick to "yanking" them out is to bias the pull to front or back of seat (forget which.) When they're out I lube the bottom of chrome rods with a little synthetic grease and they come out better next time.

The reason I took mine out is the foam inside is the (recycled?) foam made of little pieces doesn't last long and had turned to dust. (Plus one had been put in backwards.) I went to auto upholsterers and they gave me a piece of 1/2" foam and glued it around the metal backing piece and stapled covers back on. Used the plastic bag trick to slide on covers over foam. Gives firmer head rest probably what originally was like. If yours seems soft and you see/or foam dust falls out of bottom of headrest when you squeeze them, you may have to replace the foam.

Well the headrest itself seems fine - I never rest my head against it anyway! I do think they are useful safety item in event of a rear shunt. But the foam in the seat is in a bit of a state - some creative carving of a large chunk of new foam is going to necessary. Probably better leave it till I'm completely sober.
When you slide the seat cover over a plastic bag (or cling film) - is the bag left in there - or is then wiggled out from inside?

As for the safety aspect from the headrests, the foam inside has a tendency to fall apart to.
Good idea to put some new foam in them while you're at it.

You pull out the plastic if you can but if it won't come out it's ok to leave it in.

Thanks for that F1 - I will try to pull it out because otherwise i fel the seat won't be able to 'breathe'.
Further progress now likely to be delayed until after Christmas!
