Hood coming apart - which glue ?

Postby littlepippin » 04 May 2017 21:00

Hello all - my hood seems to be coming apart, mainly the stitching along the sides front to back has rotted away. Now, there are no tears or anything, and it still remains waterproof miraculously.
Wifey (who does furniture repairs) says I should just glue the parts back together - I thought about stapling it together with some nice black heavy duty staples..?
Anyway, bowing to the superior knowledge of said lady I wondered if any one had any ideas of what type of glue to use ? Has anybody done anything similar ?

I did it before with a contact adhesive, but it just went too hard and crispy and yellow, and has now broken apart again. I guess I need something strong, flexible and clear setting.

Carpet glue ? What is that called, is it PVCA or PVA. The rest of the hood (clear plastic windows, and poppers) is actually pretty good for 35 years, and after getting caught in pretty heavy rain at the weekend not a drip came in to the cabin,

Any thoughts, or previous knowhow, as usual is greatly appreciated.

Cheers all,

Sean.

Heavy duty thread and an upholsterers needle seems the best solution to me. supercass
