Maximum size speakers in door

Postby j.johnson23 » 26 May 2015 00:19

After 2 years without a working audio system I have decided to fit speakers in the doors.
Does anyone know how big you can go without butchering the door frames?

Stock is 4". The big problem is the depth. You can only go about 1.5". There are plastic covers on the back to protect them from water dripping down and they have to clear the window if you want to roll it all the way down without hitting them. The problem is most modern speakers are about 2" deep and you have to look for a special slim line design. I was going to put some Pyle speakers in with my Pyle period radio but they didn't make any that were slim enough. Didn't look for any others just used my stock ones.I didn't spend a lot of time riddling it out, just greased the latching mechanisms and put the door card back on as I was pressed for time.

My car had knackered 4" speakers when I got it (I don't think they were original). Using typical ignorance I just replaced them with 5" speakers which were on offer at Maplins but have not had a problem with the windows. I have no idea how deep they are. Does the window go down far enough forward (or low enough) to hit the speakers?

I think I've installed either 5 or 6 1/4" speakers using a different method. As mentioned, the driver is too deep for our doors. My solution was to laminate some wood together to create a "pod" for the speaker to mount. I made the circular wooden "tube" about 3" thick, then cut it diagonally with one side about 1" and the other of course at 2". Sanded and wrapped the pod in black vinyl, before screwing it to the original mounting holes. Then just install the speaker to the new angled base. I angled the speaker pod up toward the other side of the car for better sound. If interested in more, pm.

Hope your not going to cut door panels with no speaker holes in them and are using panels already cut.

You can get pretty decent stock sized speakers now if you shop around, vastly superior to the original. supercass
