Odometer setting

I was fortunate to find a speedometer with the press button re-set on the tripmeter and will be fitting it some time over the summer. It would be neat if I could set the odometer to the same mileage as my old one when I fit it so could anyone tell me how difficult that would be?

It's not difficult at all, Russ.

When you insert a small thin bladed screwdriver between two odometer wheels, you can gently lever them apart far enough to release one wheel from the little cog between them so you can turn the wheel to the number you want. If nervous, you can try on the speedo you're taking out.

I do have a couple of spare speedos so I can practice on them, thanks for the reassurance.

Do you need to change the plastic front plate to one that has a hole for the push button?

That is one thing I wish someone were making; the clear plastic on my instrument cluster isn't so clear anymore. Are there replacements, or a way to polish it?

I have acquired a complete press button instrument pod - less rev counter - so it already has the plastic lens with the hole. There is also a hole for the clock but I won't be using that as I have an oil pressure gauge instead so if anyone wants a front adjustable clock then get in touch.
I know the clear lens is quite brittle because I broke one very easily recently. It also has a different speedo cable connection, but I have a new cable "in stock" that I got off Ebay years ago by mistake. It won't fit most TR7's which is probably why it was very cheap!

I've used this trick on turn signal lenses, so I think it would work well on the instrument cluster plastic. That would be to spray it with a nice coat of a clear, glossy acrylic. I like Kryon Crystal Clear Triple Thick Glaze. This is the same basic method that some of the headlamp haze removal kits use (minus sanding off any yellowing).

I have a spare cover that isn't as nice as the one on my car, so maybe I'll give it a try sometime.

When I was fixing office equipment we used this product that worked very well. I have a bottle on my garage shelf. I can't remember if I used it on the instrument clear plastic when I had it out or not.
