I replaced the accelerator cable on my '76 LHD TR7. It has SU carbs. The pedal force is now uneven, ratchey, and requires too much force to depress. The routing is as gentle as I can make it. I've sprayed the carb linkage and even tried spraying lube down the cable. There are no binding in the cable when I checked it before installation. Anyone have any fix suggestions?

New cables aren't as good as old cables that had a teflon/nylon type coating. I would suspect the carb linkage binding. You have to activate it in the direction the cable pulls it as it may seem fine actuating it one way but bind when being pulled in the actual direction. If in the linkage it can bind because of worn linkage parts (some good post solutions that have solved this problem - search) or worn bushings can do it as well. When checking gas pedal action, cable action or linkage action both direction and resistance to that action should be present otherwise the binding might not sholw up and lead you down the garden path.

That after market cable that is being sold on Rimmer is kind of pathetic. The cable is thin as can be and as you say no coating. I may get a kit and build my own.

The other part of this is I noticed that Leyland had made a change in the pedal set up somewhere along the way. The pedal box is different between the '76 car and the '79 car. In fact one the the things I did was bend the pedal slightly to the left because it was rubbing against the carpet. That helped smooth it a bit but not enough. The '79 car's with the ZS carbs is smooth as silk. In fact almost everything about the '79 car is better. I now understand why the advice normally given is to stay away from the Speke cars. They are a different animal.

I make all cables from push-bike brake cables. They're good quality, strong and cheap, and the steel is easy to solder fittings to.

I too suffered from poor throttle cable action and solved it with the aid of the search function and Beans blog.A replacement of the bent wire linkage with a proper jointed link and a cable made from a quality pedal cycle cable transformed the whole car more than any other modification I have done.Do not just read this and say "Yeah Yeah" try it,you will be amazed.Steve..
