Got off my bum and opened the garage door, the first time since end of September.

Job to do was one recently spoke about in a recent topic " fuel sender "

got the car up on the axle stands

had a look and with a BIG bucket undid the fuel pipe, as i had no idea how much fuel i had in the car

I drove it to billing and back with no fuel gauge (a bit mad i know)

I estimated i had about 15 liters, as it turned out i had about 8 that came out.

The tank looked in great condition.

Hit of the retaining ring and let the last of the fuel out.

then removed the sender unit and compared it to the new one

OLD

NEW ( was surprised to see wires rather than the metal connectors

old and new together

Fitted and with new spade connectors it is all well after putting 5 liters of fuel in with no leaks, just to reapply the underseal.

How did you determine that the fuel tank was in good condition? As they rust from the inside out, without dropping the tank did you have a remote viewer or use a mirror?

I used something similar, buy way cheaper (if you have a computer/laptop close by - a USB borescope.

They can help you see things that are hidden.

Steve did I get it right. After draining the tank by the fuel pipe at the engine bay end, there was still fuel above the outlet hole in the tank.

This should not be the case, as the pipe end is below the tank, & I have always almost totally drained tanks this way, as the fuel continues to syphon to the bottom of the tank.

If your tank was still half full there must be an air leak in your system somewhere, which allowed the syphon to be broken. Of course this could have been in your old pickup, but I would want to find the reason, if it were mine.

No i took the pipe off at the tank. [:I]

it was only a tiny bit that came out of the outlet hole

Ok still have no gauge, i can only presume that the mice have been here again.

so i am going to run a wire from the tank to the dash.

there are four wires on the sender unit where do these go ?

the green and black - does this go strait to the gauge or does it go somewhere first?

the two black wires - i take it to be earth wires, do these go straight to earth or do they go somewhere first?

as for the other wire - not got a clue where this goes

i am off work and no plans for this weekend ( for once)

so hope to go out to the car and spend some time on it.

Have you had a look at the Manuals Wiring Diagram - the Work's one on line ?

Does your low fuel warning work?
Might not be the wiring but worth a check. I had problems and it turned out to be the gauge. Only found that out when I swapped the gauge for a spare and it now works fine.

When you say that you have no fuel gauge, do you mean that it reads totally empty or totally full? If it says totally full, then the green/black wire from the sender to the pod is shorted in the run(probably where the wires go through the body at the top of the driveshaft tunnel).

If the gauge reads totally empty, then the black wire on the sender is probably not making good contact to earth, or the green/black is not making good contact at the sender or lastly, you have the wires reversed on the sender. I can see from your photos that one of the green wires has been crimped close to the sender unit. Has the wiring been totally cut and the insulation just holding it together?

Low fuel warning light: Note that the lever that holds the float on the sender unit rests on a metal tab when it hits bottom. This is actually a switch and connects to the green/orange wire. When The float support wires touches the rest, it complete a circuit to ground through the sender. The green/orange wire goes to the delay unit that is connected to the back and above the pod. when it receives power a given lenght of time, it turns on the warning light, other wise it would be blinking on every time you took off to fast from a light.

put my modified dash back in, ran a wire from the tank strait to the gauge (after market one)

put on new live and earth and all working

voltmeter now working

rev counter now working

clock working

next to wire up temp gauge (after market)

then check all bulbs work correctly, this is a heavily modified dash

was out today again to have a look, took a deep breath and started again

now have all gauges including a clock, now need to try and get all the warning light to work.

Oh by the way i did find the problem ...[}:)]

yet another dead one of these little fellas sitting at the end of the bulkhead just below the carpet...

I have traps, electronic sound wave things and poison down, but no they like in the car.

this is what they did the last time to my hats in the glove box
