Spark Plug Lube

Postby FI Spyder » 02 Apr 2014 00:36

This was touched on a few weeks/months back. I was going to change my spark plugs the other day so did a Google on spark plug lube. First link I opened was an NGK one. Here's the skinny. Spark plugs that have a shiny coating on the threads like the NGK do not need lube as that is what the metallic coatings does. If this coating is worn off or spark plugs that are black need anti-seize on threads. I had Autolites which are black and I had put anti-seize on them last time I had them out to check on them. I had bought NGK G Power plugs so didn't need it. I put a little carb cleaner on a Q-tip (another brand) to wipe out the threads in the head and the other end dry to complete. Thought I'd pass it along.

Hi,

Personally, I have used copperslip on all spark plug threads, something I was taught as an apprentice and its always stuck.

Cheers John

Back in the day (circa 1967)I had a Yamaha Twin Jet motorcycle. We always used NGK's (which they came with of course) as the threads had a higher nickel content and the threads wouldn't stick to the aluminum head like other manufacturers like Champion. No one ever mentioned lubing the threads in those days (maybe we just didn't know about it).

I use a pinch of copper grease, too.
