rain leak

Postby stephenjtsims » 22 Nov 2013 21:08

What are the main routes for rain water getting into the passenger compartment? Water is collecting in one of the troughs just behind the driver's seat (which is out as is the carpet)?

Does it come in when sitting in the rain, or when driving on wet roads?

The heater pipe seal crumbles over time and will eventually let water in. You can sometimes see it when hosing the car and then pull the carpet back on the transmission tunnle to bulkhead.

From my experience of a DHC.......

Rainwater entered the cabin from 2 main places.

1) The points where the top of the doors' quarterlights meet the A post and hood material. (That means both doors) These only leaked when parked up for a while in heavy rain, not when moving. Water falls directly on to the front corner of the respective seats and then trickles back on to the absorbent tartan material and sponge core. Lovely wet seats....

2) Over the top of the inner sills directly under the doors. The plastic membrane behind the door cards deteriorates, or goes missing when the doors are restored. Instead of exiting through the doors' drain holes the rainwater falls down the inside of the door, over the rubber door seals and into the car.

Just for fun the steel pipes to and from the heater matrix corrode inside and out and the resulting rust expands and lifts the hardened rubber seals off these pipes. When the seals leak, they let go big time and sweet sickly steam fills the cabin and mists up the windscreen.

I've only noticed rain getting in under two conditions (and I;ve been in some rainstorms. One is when you are driving in the rain then stop, the rain drips on through the top of the quarterlights as mentioned. Once you get going again, it stops but is a little annoying at traffic lights.

Two, over night out in the rain the drivers seat was wet but the passenger seat was dry. I concluded the wind must have been driving the rain sideways forcing it between the top of window and the top, the sheltered side was dry.

If it's really coming down a few drops will get past the top of the window and the top. I noticed this at car show at Portland were there was a trickle/few drops on the inside of the window. Other than that it's pretty dry.
