Ooooh no cars!

3 cars all taxed and mot'd and none work [xx(]

Modern VW in for a new clutch so chance to run through 7 for a few days, already had a few good outings this year.

But first day in the way home there's clouds of blue smoke from the bonnet vents and in the car, b*****r. Managed to get home, or even of the camera cover nuts has disappeared and oil sitting out over the engine etc. Not got a spare.

The spitfire is taxed and mot'd but 50 miles away and stripped for a bonnet respray.

Some days things just don't go your way.

At least the garage has a loan car.

Predictive text huh.

Back on the PC now.

Basically on the way home there was clouds of blue smoke, turned out she had lost one of the cam cover nuts. Oil was spitting out from the hole all over the engine and exhaust. [:(!]


So three cars and none working (ok a grommet could provide a temporary fix). Anyway new parts are on the way.

In the meantime the VW is still off the road as the parts supplier sent the wrong flywheel for the right clutch.

The garage is very good, the job is taking a lot longer than planned and the extra costs are being covered between them.

Hi Pete, sorry to hear you're without classic, glad you've been using the TR a bit though, been following the progress of the spit on the other site.

Thanks Clayps, hopefully TR back in action tomorrow evening, VW back on Friday and Spitfire bonnet respray this weekend.

Better news for the TR is that I have found a supplier of cellulose paint in the right colour. So summer respray is on the cards.

The replacement nut and a set of washers arrived this morning and have just been fitted.

No more smoke but there are a couple of concerns.

The engine is running a rough, I dont know but this could be due to the soaking the ignition leads had from the oil. I will clean it all up when I get time.

Second concern, I removed the oil filler cap with the engine running. The cam box area was pressurised, is this normal for the TR7, I had expected to find negative pressure?

Any thoughts?

how much pressure do you call pressure, its perfectly normal to have some degree of pressure in there, If you take off the oil cap and replace it you'll feel some resistance or are you talking full blown hisss hisss.........

Not really sure, oil fumes coming out. I put my hand over and could feel it. I know on the Spit I expect negative pressure.

I've never known an engine that was not pressurised. An F100 Ford V8 I once owned was like a steam train.

Don't forget the timing chain is spinning around right under the oil filler cap. Centrifugal force, as it runs around with the cam pulley, will throw oil everywhere, with the cap off while the engine is running.
